Valve clearance on '82 CB650 head?
« on: May 10, 2022, 11:06:11 AM »
Hello!

I have posted this issue on the project page but thought i'd try here as well to see if i can get some more input.
I got my head back from vapor-blast in a sorry state and will need to machine it down quite heavily to get a flat surface (I think just by looking at it)

My questions is if anyone happens know what clearances i have to work with on this engine? As in the max amount that can be shaved off the head while keeping valve clearance? Or if there's a way of getting clearance without having to shave the pistons as well. My budget is quite tight right now and was hoping to get the engine back together for summer  :-\

Any input appreciated

Dont think there is a spec for skimming but i suspect 5 thou will clean that and should not affect clearance
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks! I hope you are right. It looks awfully deep to me  :-\

I will just have it machined and make sure they keep an eye on how much they needed to take and go from there
