Yellow paint blobs
« on: March 05, 2007, 07:12:59 AM »
So, the little yellow blobs of paint I'm finding on my 550 resto.... swingarm bolts, etc..  It's weird, I kinda like them, really seems to add a "fresh from the factory" look to certain areas.  Anyway, I'm sure some have been cleaned off this thing... anybody know where they should be?  And is it yellow or faded orange etc?  Thanks
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

It's yellow and as far as I know was done at assembly to mark a bolt/nut that had been properly torqued. A Honda tech that I used to use would mark them as he worked to preserve the factory look and to insure that everything he worked on was torqued to spec.

Was also used by dealers when brought in for warranty work to see if bike had been taken apart. My original 550 has markings in the front rotor bolts, front brake banjo fitting, bottom triple tree cinch bolts, rear swing arm bolt, and front pivot for rear brake brake rod.

Yellow nail polish works good too. Plus it comes with a nice applicator brush. ;)

Mike, won't ask why you have yellow nail polish on you bench. I guess it's because red can look trashy before 6:00.

Actually, I have white nail polish in my workbench. I didn't find anything better to restore my tank badges...

I  use the same system, after all the test fitting when I am happy I torque down and then put a dot of yellow paint on the bolt/nut, it shows me that I have torqued it down and it also will show clearly if anything works loose. I scale build models so am using Humbrol model paint (H24 Matt).

I tried the red and you're right, it made the bike look like a trashy French hooker. ;D ;D ;D

I noticed it on my k-6, but just assumed the po had wrecked and used junk yard parts to rebuild.  but now that I put some thought into it, it doesn't make sense that just the bolt heads would be marked if it were from a junkyard.

Some of the marks are anti-tamper one such as those made with Torque seal.
http://www.aedwis.com/torqueseal.html
These are the narrow ones like those found on the Brake components.

The wide ones were felt tipped paint pens, applied after the bolt or nut was torque checked on the production line.

The marks on my 77 CB550F are still pretty well preserved and they are yellow.
