Vibration after 5k rpm
« on: May 15, 2022, 06:55:21 PM »
1973 cb500, have this issue where once I pass 5000 rpm, I can feel everything vibrate. Feel it hard in my hands on the handlebars, and my mirrors become useless. These bikes are known to be smooth so I know something is off.

I have done a full 3000 mile tuneup when I first got the parked bike, including a carb sync. Could it be an issue with mixture? My plugs look lean, not sure why. Air screws 1 turn out, needle 2nd from bottom. Everything stock on the bike. Should I double check the carb sync? I made sure to do it when the engine was warm.

Some light vibrations around the rpm you've indicated, resulting in blurry mirrors, is perfectly normal for this model. It can't be helped. Over 6000 they should disappear however. But... vibrations making your hands shake, are not normal.
First concentrate on the ignition. Once all aspects of the ignition have been checked, one may conclude a sync is not needed. Be aware that in this forum syncing has reached epidemic levels.

As above, also check all your engine mounting bolts and exhaust bolts are tight

When you did the 300 mi tune-up, did you use aftermarket carb kits?  If no, you may want to confirm you have genuine Keihin jets, they may have been changed along the way.
I dont think this is your vibration issue though.  Has the motor been rebuilt?

I used all the original brass other than the float needle and the brass piece the needle seals into. Motor has not been rebuilt to my knowledge
