Uni filters are tough to not over oil and that leads to richer mixtures... Too much variability possible in oiling them.
Congratulations on getting it to idle nicely! Must make you really happy!

I hear you, but I've used them for years without issue. Over oiling would make it rich and a hanging idle is indicative of a lean condition.  The mixture screws are at half a turn...also indicative that it was lean before.
I dunno....it stumps me, and I've fought a similar issue on the last 3 or 4 bikes.

Does the CB500 Four have it's idle air/mixture screws at the back of the carb throats ?

Happy ending, maybe more the possible start-up of a very good looking classic bike! ;D

Described problem with how to fix it will help others to find the root cause of a similar problem.

Well done, but it should bot be that sensitive to the pilot air screws. Been following this as my all original 71 500 also suffered the dreaded hanging idle. It is definitely just related to the carbs as I swapped them to another bike to work on them.
But I see the mirrors you have may be Honda, but not 500.
These are original.

You know what? I see the subtle differences now. But, I always thought that the HM on the mirrors meant they were genuine Honda.
 Are mine OEM?
Either way, they fit and work a hundred times better than the aftermarket ones they replaced.
