'81 CB650C Carburetor Order incorrect
« on: May 30, 2022, 02:58:32 PM »

So referring to the image above, isn't the carburetor that's attached to cyl #3 with the little vacuum port and filled in screw whole for carb syncing that I circled supposed to be in a different spot, attached to cyl #2? Do I have to rearrange the carbs to the correct orientation for the bike to run (which is currently is not)? Or can I just use that carburetor as the reference when I sync them in the future as if it was in the correct spot. Thanks for your help  ;D

All the carbs have that port. You can just unscrew it and put it back in the number 2 carb. The #2 is the reference carb for syncing and is "non adjustable" for sync (you sync the other three to #2), but you need to install those "spigots" in each one in order to run a carb tool.

Most likley a PO didn't put it back on the #2 carb after a sync job, although I'm not sure why you would move it off the #2 to start with. Let me go check my spare rack and see if it's there on mine....

Carb #2 should also be the carb with the accelerator pump, built into the bowl. Not sure how they would fit together in the wrong order but ...

The carb banks have been taken apart before, and by a ham-fisted animal who didn't use a JIS screwdriver.

It'd do you good to take them out. open them up, and clean the living hell out of everything. You could go so far as to replace all fasteners with allen head bolts, but it isn't necessary.

Yeah I’ve rebuilt the carbs at the top and bottom, but haven’t been able too separate them because the screws are so #$%*in stuck on. Even after soaking in penetrating fluid they wont budge.

Buy yourself an "impact driver":

Works great, even on messed up screw heads. I actually use one on all my carbs, even if a fastener isn't stuck. Mostly because the impact driver bits are closer to JIS (Japanese industrial standard) instead of the NA tapered Phillips screwdrivers. JIS has straight "flutes" on the bits which causes them to "cam" in to the fastener with more applied force, while the NA Phillips has tapered sides and tends to want to "cam" it's way out of a fastener as more force is applied. That's why a Phillips bit very often ruins the screw heads on Jap bikes.

Should be able to pick one up somewhere around 20 bucks.

Once you get those fasteners out, toss 'em and replace with cap head screws and it will never strip again. Harder steel int eh fastener, more of a positive tool engagement when tightening/loosening. Well, they won't strip as long as someone doesn't put the wrong Allen key in it or gets really "ham-fisted" with them that is.....

Thanks for that. Definitely something I need to add to my ever growing tool collection. Ive had to buy stripped bolt head extractors because the po cut up a ton of #$%* on the bike (side panel mounts, frame under the seat, the seat mounts, headlight), used an air gun or something to torque down every bolt to jesus level, and then plugged the horn wires into the ignition coil. Then when it wouldn’t run, he just threw his amalgamation into the garage for a few years.

Anyways thanks for the help and sorry for the rant lol

Oh no, that bike is in rough shape. Man, if you could get that motor / carb setup running right then I'd be tempted to just find a donor frame and transfer everything over. Find original seat, handlebars, replace that horrid looking muffler, and a rear tire that doesn't look like it has an extremely square profile.

Or do none of that. I don't know. I can't wrap my head around what the PO was attempting to accomplish here. Sorry you have to deal with all of it.

Whoo-wee! That's one jacked up rig!

I'd probably be more inclined to use it as a parts bike, but if you want to bring it back....give'er!

Repair dis #$%* to the max. How many cheap CB I could find after looking for months on Facebook. At least I don’t have to feel bad cutting up a vintage bike. Turnin it into some sort of café racer/scrambler combination lol
