Hey all,

I can't find hardly anyone local who offers vapor blasting, so I was wondering if anyone in the DFW area is interested in my vapor honing services? I have my cabinet set up and it's giving good results so far, just need to some different parts to get sizing down.

Not in the DFW area but I have some aluminum Chevy valve covers that I would like to get done.
Could you fit those in your cabinet? Sorry, no pics ATM.

absolutely will fit. i believe I can fit up to a 19" motorcycle wheel in there. PM sent.

You got a good way to complete the process with a drip/soak to clean all the passages??

hey wannabridin does this process just clean the surface of the items.
I have a couple of points covers that I cast where i have to sand down some areas but others are untouched.
I want to bring the sanded areas back to the original cast look before I sanded.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner (fairly good sized) to clean out passages in carbs and other parts, followed by a water rinse and compressed air dry.

This process does not effect the surface of the parts in any measurable way. Maybe some lightly adhered burrs will be removed, but largely the surface is a bit smoother (honed) but otherwise all surface level imperfections (casting marks, pitting, etc.) will remain. If you want to maintain a cast look but have the surface brightened up a bit, this will likely be perfect! If you'd like, feel free to send a sample part to me and i'll test blast it. If you like it, I can keep working, otherwise I'll send it back to you.

The glass beads wash away very easily with water or soapy water. I have a fairly large ultrasonic tank that most of the small parts get a little soak in after blasting. Followed by a final clean water rinse and a thorough air blasting.

Getting the cases clean on a XS650. Still gotta do the head, bottom case, side cover & rocker cover, among other things. Looks great!!

Just an aside
Vapor honing is great, maybe the best way to clean up these bike parts. However, doing a bare engine case, head etc. requires a huge and thorough cleaning and inspection effort that some folks may not be ready for.

Of course. I wash all the parts with an immersion and solid stream of soapy water followed by compressed air through all passages.

Indeed. Rigged up a nice wash basin last night to clean the parts further. Brake cleaner and compressed air will really clean em out nice. Might try to make a rinse jet for the basin next too

Leaving it as is, might put a protective coating on it (ACF 50 or similar). But otherwise, I don't think there will be anything other than that :-D

The vapor blasting does have it's own natural satin hue to it

Exactly. The surface is quite smooth and lets the metal speak for itself. The magnesium fan had such a "gentle" look to it. The owner couldn't believe how nice it turned out!

One downside to it is that it shows off flaws in the castings, but NBD!!
