Oil light
« on: June 09, 2022, 06:27:39 PM »

1979 CB650
Hi All

Have had some difficulty with the oil light on this bike lately
Took the battery box off to repaint it and took the headlight out to clean it. since I put them back the oil light has been coming on after a couple of minutes of riding. Checked the oil multiple times and it's right between the lines on the dipstick. Checked wires around the battery box and in the headlight assembly, traced the wires (through some bundling granted) all the way through their circuits, jiggled all the connections, even removed/cleaned replaced the oil pump switch. Everything seems to be in place, bike runs normally and it still happens. If I pull over and turn the key off and back on the light goes out but comes on after a couple of minutes of riding again (haven't gone any long distances since this started).

Any other thoughts on trouble shooting?

Sounds like the oil pressure switch needs changing, they don't last forever. I've had a few over the years causing same issues as you are experiencing. Fitted new pressure switch and all sorted.

This did the trick! Strong work Nurse Julie!

At first it went from intermittently on to always on, then I realized the wire going from the top of the switch to the bike (which is bare for some reason???) was grounding on the crankcase cover and just needed to be re-positioned so it wouldn't make contact.

Replace the wire if it's bare..... it should have insulation on it.
