CB750K2 electrical breakdown stuck on roadside
« on: June 26, 2022, 07:45:41 AM »
Coming down Rt2 heading for a day in VT. Riding for about 20 min from home. Pull away from some lights and bike sputters like it’s running out of fuel (it’s not the fuel) and dies. No electrics aside from headlight that runs off a relay to battery.

Check one and only main fuse - it’s good. I swap it for 3 other good ones - no difference no idiot lights, no blinkers and no start.

Pull the tank off and check all electrical connections. All good.

Put a screwdriver across solenoid to see if it will turn over - it sparks but no turn over.

Bump start it - nothing.

How bright is the headlight? Does it get dimmer when the key is turned on?

Battery was at 10.6v. Swapped it out for the K4 battery:
Key off 12.45v
Key on: 11.99v

Idiot lights came on. Bike fired right up. So ignition is good.

Battery is 2 years old and kept on charge over winter. Could be alternator not charging battery. Had this happen previously and replaced the wires. Will need to pull cover to check

It could be the alternator, wires, rectifier or dead cell in the battery.

Battery can be bad. Quick test with another known good battery.

I read somewhere that AGM batteries charge at higher voltage.

Repeat now and then. Not constant charging for long time.
The guy at a battery shop confirmed that when my K6 got an AGM battery this spring.
Charger has a special AGM mode or snowflake which charge at a  higher voltage.

Andy, my older AGM battery quit on me and it looked like that. One second it was cranking the starter next second almost nothing. I kick started it and rode the bike home, headlight off, don’t honk the horn, don’t touch the brakes, don’t use the turn signal, keep RPMs up.
What’s the voltages with the bike running?
2000 RPM?
3000 RPM?
4000 RPM?

Ok so used the afternoon constructively…thank you for all the suggestions.

Found a short in the wiring harness just where horn wires come out of junction. Area was hot when key on. If I pressed on harness, idiot lights went off. Did this several times. So broken wire in harness making intermittent contact.

I recently changed gas tanks on this bike so maybe new tank pressed the harness at a wrong angle or something like that.

I cut into the harness just to be sure. Going to replace the harness.

I did verify it wasn’t the battery as swapped it out for a working on and bike fired up. However went I put gas tank back on lights no longer came on which led me to pulling the tank off and playing around with the wiring watching the lights go on/off.

For reference with the new harness how is everyone routing their harness - under the tank puck (like I did) or some other way? Does anyone have a good guide for OEM wire harness routing?

thanks

If you can find pdi instructions that will give routing, in the loom there is a multi black crimped/soldered joint and same for a green both can give bad connections after 40 yrs

I have routed it over the tank rubber puck on left side.
I always have to help tank  with a few fingers to pass  over puck holder when mounting the tank.
Both throttle cables routed there too, also over the pucks, inside tank.

Look messy but work fine.

There are other connections over left coil packed in electrical fiberflass tape. To from relay plus voltmeter at front and sturdier sockets

This sudden battery drain reminds me about my brown K2 that suddenly had no power at all last spring.
My battery charger (CTEK MXS 5.0) reported battery failure.

No fuse gone. It has only one std plus hanging fuses for all 12 V from battery to all additional relays.

Quickly found that the ignition relay I had mounted had a shortcircuit between 12V and ground.
Charger happy when I removed the hanging fuse to it. Fuse OK.
Relay was not auto type that has some IP rating. I used mini relay for electronics.
Remembered that I washed the bike a week before....

Replaced relay just for sure, mounted it upside down closer to battery so no water could splash onto it as before. Tape and shrink hose helped too.

- So a small current leak can drain battery and not blowing the fuse.
This happened in my garage, correct place for failures. ;D

I have had a battery issue on a vacation ride to Italy when headlight suddenly went black in the evening into a sharp corner on a small coastal road. Not nice surprise. All blinkers started to glow when headlight went black.

I had to keep rev over 4000rpm to have headlight.
This was not seen before on highways when rev was constantly higher.

That was a bad battery.
Cheap battery not much maintained with a charger.
Battery chargers first half of the 80's were not that good, almost DC thru its output.

I encountered drained battery on my car this morning ;D ;D

Car not much used the last year, not maintained with charger either. Alarm drain battery if not charged.
Alarm with its own battery was pissed when I had to open car with key manually plus open the hood for charger.
Back in business after a few hours charging, resynching key with car so remote works.
Charge it for 2 days every month is my plan.

Thanks Per for the very clear photo which is the opposite of what I have been doing for years - my throttle cables run under the puck as does the wiring harness - been that way for years but I guess a tank change put some pressure on the harness. Problem waiting to happen. New harness from Yamiya due here Friday so hopefully can get it swapped out seamlessly.
Thank you for all the input.
cheers

ha, i just dealt with this, the three black wires in the harness that come together just before the ignition switched partly melted together because of an aftermarket switch not being able to handle load. Months later (recently) if touched the harness right in front of the tank the lights would go out and off, bike would die whenever it wanted....i opened the harness and found the fused and melted wires. all fixed.

Hey Andy...sorry to hear this but seems it happens to all of us at some point.

On my K4, the short was a bare horn wire grounding out intermittently, took awhile but finally found and addressed the issue.

Good luck with yours.

Your new harness and cable routing will hopefully work fine.

Another stopping short that I had some years ago on my K6:
Wiring for rear brake switch. Aftermarket version. Bullet plug isolation did not sit, moved downwards along the wire and left 12V from switch bare. Short when used the  brake.
Happened twice until I found out where.... Dark autumn.

Short against engine or engine hanger bolt/bracket. The main fuse blew. So bike died, no light.
That circuit should be connected to rear light fuse, 5A.
I ordered several packs of difficult to find glass fuses after that.

My K2 has only 1 fuse.
I have strapped those wires better to frame beside oil tank after that.
