Fuel in the air filter box question ???
« on: July 03, 2022, 03:54:18 PM »
So, I noticed a fuel smell from my 76 CB750 K6 and took the bottom of the air filter box off only to find fuel in there. I know this is abnormal and I was wondering if this problem has been discussed? *I know it’s not a vacuum fuel petcock and it should be turned off between rides but.....????

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Even shut off you can get a petcock that is a leaker. An easy way to find out is to pull off the fuel line and put a piece of paper under it or a section of spare line in a bottle. I have found that can happen even if the float bowl vents/overflows are clear but worth checking to make sure they and the rubber tubes are. Also if its getting in the air box it could be getting in the intake and eventually oil also. Might want to take a whiff off the dipstick or tank.
Is the bike brand new to you and are you pointing the petcock handle the right way when off ?

Great suggestion. I will try the spare fuel line into a bottle and report back. *I will also check the dipstick for fuel smell.

Keep the suggestions coming!

I have seen fuel in airbox too. The owerflow hoses from the float bowls were not really working. The fragile brass pipes inside bowls blocked so fuel found its way to the airbox.
I drilled small holes (1.5-2mm in the airbox corners so I should see next time it flow in there.
Only happened when parked, petcock not off. When overflowing now it take the correct way via the working overflow hoses routed behind engine to ground.

When cleaning those hoses make sure that the 2 vent hoses are not blocked.

Dripping petcock despite closed might need a new one if not finding the correct parts for the K6 petcock.
