Registering a new frame
« on: July 02, 2022, 03:33:42 AM »
I read Tourmax's post about building a custom frame and it made me think, there would be no VIN# to register it with.  I did not want to hijack his thread.

If one was to build their own frame, how would they get it titled and registered without a VIN#?  Obviously it is done all the time and has been for a long time.  When I moved to NC 2 years ago I had to go through a lot of hoops to register/title my 2 bikes and ended up having the state police DMV unit coming out to my house and do a visual and photograph the stamped VIN#'s on the neck.

Anybody here ever done this?

Each state has procedures.
Check with your dmv office.

If you are proceeding, save every receipt and the name of source for every part including vin's of bikes you use parts from. I'd staple every one of them to a sheet of paper with an explanation of what it is for. Keep a log of anything that may be necessary to get a new title.

All good advice. Also, check with you current insurance company and see how they feel about “home built” motorcycles? Here in Canada these rat bastards are choking the life out of any creativity by Hot Rodders. Any deviation from the original, approved design is considered “dangerous”.....

On my last attempt at insuring a custom bike, I finally gave up and sold it.
