Continental Conti Go tire recall
« on: July 24, 2022, 04:03:21 PM »
Yesterday I got a letter from Continental stating that my Korean Conti-Go tires will be recalled and replaced as Continental has found groove cracking during internal testing and this can lead to tread separation.

Ouch! Mid season troubles

I will be offered a “substantially similar tire”.
The recall includes TKC80 (dual sport), LB and K62 (scooter)

Do you run Continentals? Which ones?

The letter doesn’t say there have been on-the-road failures, it says they found cracks during a test that can lead to a crash.

I run a ContiGo street front tire on my small Honda and really enjoy it;it handles well and the rain grooves work good,a good companion to my Avon RoadRider.
I ordered it from a company that gets them occasionally from overseas but would rather find a USA dealer if one exists as they are a good tire and I would run them front & rear.
I have had good life out of my front tire and would like to order others.

Recalled Conti Go tire production date codes are 0119-1722
No other tire sizes, production periods or product lines are affected.

This is my first go around with Continental, I have been on Bridgestones for quite a while. Yes, grcamna2, mine have been good to me for 1 1/2 seasons. These were from American Moto Tire and their website is showing all of their Conti Go tires are out of stock. Give them a call, maybe they can help you.

Here is the recalled tires. If you have one of these, they are looking for you:

+1.   Thx for the info, Kevin.

Kinda surprised you put the Conti-Gos on your CB750, such a modern tread design.

I’m not a slave to vintage, and I like having modern touches on my CB: paint, motor oil, SS brake lines, fuel, lighting, tires, chain.
Stev-o, this is my one and only. It’s a rider, not a show bike.
I decided to switch from Bridgestones last time around, and there were many tires NOT available, the ContiGo was available. I don’t know the Continental/Avon/Dunlop/Michelin tire lines as well as the Bridgestones BT45/46. The Bridgestones were OK, just looking for something that might be better……. And the ContiGo is not better, and I don’t yet know what the “substantially similar” replacement will be.
I have to give Continental a fair amount of credit: it looks like they found this problem themselves and initiated this recall. These tires are Korean Continentals, not German Continentals.

Yes, understood.

And I remember buying the Conti, when I received it and read on the sidewall that it was not made in Germany, was a little disappointed.  But still great tires.

Curious too on what they send you...

I been running Continental TKV10/12 on my GS1100 for a while...super sticky, expensive, and only got about 3000 miles out of a rear.  Never recalled though.  Seems like vintage suitable stuff has taken the biggest availability hit in the last couple years.
If it works good, it looks good...

Thanks for the reply Medyo, where are you at? I don’t see Conti Blitz available here in a catalog or a Google search.

I’m just trying to see what I might be offered.

But at this point it’s been two weeks and NOTHING has been offered and it’s beginning to put a crimp in my riding.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy some Cheapo tires to finish this season, and then get some proper tires in the off-season.

I wonder if he has them "under his bed"?!!

Seems the Blitz may have been discontinued but I see them in a couple random websites...

Stev-o, this is my first dealing with Continental and I wouldn’t have got them if I thought they were less than top notch. But they weren’t my first choice, the Avons and Metzler were not available, the Michelins were quite a bit more.

Continental has whiffed with the ContiGo strike one.
I have no idea when the replacements will be here or what they will be strike two.
Maybe a phone call or an email is in order.

I’m sure you have had a good experience with the Conti-Twins and yes they have the authentic look of the original tires. Me, I step on the turd in the grass too often.  :)

Are you not riding the bike right now because of the recall ? This article claims there have been no known on road issues/accidents reported but the problems/indication of on some did develop in their endurance testing. Especially since your also running tubes I would run them without worry till your recall happens. I'd be embarrassed to show some of the old tires I have rode on in the past on newly acquired projects etc..  https://www.motorcycle.com/safety/continental-recalls-68770-tires-including-tkc-80-contigo-k62-and-lb.html

Thanks for that article Eric, I had not seen it and there is much more detail in the article about what is driving the recall. I have inspected these tires for groove cracking and not seen any, and I will look again. But for sure I’m not a qualified tire inspector, and I’m not going to plan any travel on these tires. I don’t and won’t pack a passenger.
I went for a 100 miler today, the second ride since I got the letter, and dodged every bump I could, and cringed if I hit one.

Thanks all for your input, it seems reasonable to continue as long as no flaws are noted. It would be nice to hear that from Continental.

Way back, I did some duty (a week?) as a high voltage rubber glove inspector. The gloves were used up to 15kv AC and tested at 25kv?AC. They were placed on an inflator and blown up until they were distended. Any holes would hiss, any cuts would be apparent. These days the rubber is layered black-yellow so the cuts are obvious.
I had totally forgotten that episode grcamna until your suggestion. :)

I would bet that their 'endurance testing' is a lot more rugged and brutal then us old timers do out puttin' around on our old 750's. Saw a little bit on the net of what they do during the test and its max speed + continual running etc. etc..

Still no word from Continental…. On the claim form they asked me to drill a hole in the sidewall near the date code and send a photo to initiate the recall. Well I won’t be able to move my bike with two flat tires, not to mention no riding in prime season. Maybe when the snow flies?

The K112s would be OK, although a ribbed front tire says vintage out loud. I guess I could get past that, and I’m happy that Continental is self-reporting this flaw. I vaguely remember the 1999 Firestone tire and Ford Explorer troubles and the rollover crashes, a nasty chapter in tire history. I wouldn’t know if Continental considers ContiGo to be “substantially similar” to RB2/K112.

I recall when I started my first bike which was the KO and asked this board for recommendations for the vintage look. They steered me to the K112 and I have liked them since. Granted, I am not an aggressive rider so it may not be for everyone.
