500 oil leak
« on: September 29, 2022, 08:02:11 PM »
Hi All,
I have an oil leak from the clutch cover on my 500; I suspect it's from the oil seal where the clutch rod goes through. Can that be replaced without splitting the cases?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Oil leaks in there are rarely the pushrod seal, normaly the gearchange seal or the oil pump cover which is an O ring not shown in the parts book but size given lots of times on this site.
Yes both pushrod and gearchange seal can be changed but also make sure pushrod is in one piece not broken by chain

Thanks Bryan, pushrod is good, I replaced it already as it was broken.
I haven't actually isolated where the leak is coming from, other than from the sprocket cover, but good if I can cure it without pulling the engine.
Cheers.

Usually it's the gearshift shaft seal. What worked for me was selecting an engine oil, that helps keep rubber parts supple and tight. The 15W-40 GTX High Mileage by Castrol cured mine and the new seal I had already ordered, is still in its package.
Decades ago the much praised full synthetic Mobil 1 oil did exactly the opposite. On a vacation in Spain I had to renew the oilpump O-rings.

Thanks for that Deltarider, might be a worthwhile experiment. I'll pull the cover again and see if I can located the leak. I initially thought it was the sump pan, but I've resealed that twice. I pulled the clutch cover and cleaned it out and it took several weeks to start leaking again, and then only if on the centrestand, so I'm pretty sure the leak is from behind there somewhere.
Cheers.

oil pump to case o rings get flattened and can weep so slow but build up in that cover void, bit hard to spot with chain lube splatter etc,if the 500 has a worn corkscrew action itll shove the rod sideways a little or up n down and all about flexing that rod seal aswell.

I'm running Castrol Magnatec. Is that likely to be my issue? I have Castrol Ultra Clean, any experience with that?
Thanks.

if ya got a leak ya got a leak?i doubt if oil brand or type really helps or hinders?some may say otherwise?a leak vs a slight misty weep maybe.
