CB500K1 Primary Chain damage, should I be worried?
« on: August 03, 2022, 01:04:08 AM »
Hi all,
I was just inspecting the primary chain damage on my cb500 and it feels like it's pretty deep into the gallery.

My plan is eventually to rebuild the bottom end but in the mean time I was going to fit the CB650 tensioner. Is the damage to the gallery anything to worry about? I'm not sure how thick it is there.

The casting is pretty thick, i have considered having a steel insert tube fitted before but never bothered.
Hard part of 650 tensioner is getting one then you need a block machined to fit inside case.
If you go to uk forum a member named oddjob had 2 made but they were not cheap.
ALWAYS  change the damper rubbers in the primary gear drive, still available from honda and a Kawasaki primary chain is same but half Honda price
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Ok thanks mate, I won't worry about the damage.

I am currently getting quotes for the bracket, I also created a .step file that CNC places can use so once I have tested that it fits ok I'll post it here.

Yeah will do, I'll see how it goes with just the tensioner and see if I can get another year out of it before I pull it down and when I do I'll grab a new chain and rubbers. Thanks for your help

The 650 tensioner requires the deeper 650 sump too....
