Most picture management software has a "Save for Web" option (or similar) that allows you to save a massive multi-mega-pixel digital camera shot to 640x480

My HP printer software does it for me.

Glenn recommends some freeware software, I'm sure it's in the FAQs somewhere.

resize your images for message boards here
http://imageshack.us/
On that link, you "browse" your docoments for your saved image, click "host it", next page appears and you scroll to bottom and copy "Direct link to image".
Now, on THIS page, click on the "insert image" icon (2nd from left just above the smileys) which will appear in this white text area as:
(img)(img)
then you paste what you copied ("Direct link to image") exactly in the middle of (img)x(img)
Its not ez to explain but I tried.

FWIW, I use an older shareware version of Paint Shop Pro (v4.12); it's fully-featured, has a small footprint, and it's free!   ;D

If you're running Windows XP, you might be interested in Microsoft's Image Resizer powertoy. For example, with the Image Resizer I can resize a 10+ megapixel 3512 KB file to 640x480 @ 38KB or 800x600 @ 49KB or 1024x768 @ 66KB. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

More info here: http://www.wikihow.com/Easily-Resize-Photos-in-Windows-XP

I've got Photoshop, Picassa, Faststone, etc. etc. but nothing beats Image Resizer for simplicity and speed. Just right-click the image file (or fileS - it also works in batch mode - Ctrl+click), click Resize Pictures, select small, medium, or large, click OK. Done.

Your dial-up buddies are very happy.

You probably already know how to do this in batch mode, but for those who might not . . .
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder where all the images are stored and click the first image in the folder
Hold down the shift key and scroll down to the last image and click it
Right-click the selected list and click Resize Pictures

Like this

For resizing with bells and whistles, check out the Faststone Photo Resizer freebie here: http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm
Other Faststone image freebies are here: http://www.faststone.org/

Bottom Line: Resize your images - the moderators and dial-up members will appreciate it.  ;D

Basically, Jim, I just took the link that you posted and typed "[ img ]" in front of it and "[ /img ]" behind it (Minus the spaces), and what you see is what you get (literally).

Just hit "quote" on my post and you'll see how the link is typed in. That's how I figured out how to do it.

Next we'll teach you how to Post a Link Without having to post the full mile long address from the address bar.  :)

Excellent cb360t, I was trying to figure out the batch resize last night...I gave up!

Well hell, maybe one more tip for the cognoscenti . . .

Now you know how to resize one or all of your images from within Windows Explorer.

Maybe you want to resize some of your images; if so, proceed as follows:
  Navigate to your image folder
Hold down the Ctrl key and click each file you want to resize
  OR
Use the Shift key to select them all and then the Ctrl key to deselect the ones you don't want to resize
  Right-click and click Resize Pictures

This stuff is basic Windows file management; it has nothing to do with resizing per se
  More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Explorer
  And here:        http://www.edu.pe.ca/journeyon/pro_d_pages/file_management/FileManagementinWindows.htm
