Salt report
« on: September 19, 2022, 10:17:05 AM »
I was at Bonneville last week, the salt was nearly free of standing water but was still closed to vehicles. We went to the end of the road for a look and the park officials were there keeping people off of the salt in that area.
Two days later we went back on the way home, it had rained, and the salt was flooded again. I did get to see the floating mountain mirage in person that I had seen in photos over the years. The sky reflects in the water and the mountain appears to be floating in the sky. I was on the wrong side of the road and driving to get a good picture of it though.
They had to take the sailboats and most of the other boats out of the Great Salt Lake, it is a record 10 feet below the 1800's depth measurement. Ironic, right?
I was told they weren't removing salt from the flats anymore, but Morton and Cargill had mountains of salt next to their plants right there.

Last i read, the salt factories agreed to pump their post process "waste" slurry back to the flats.
Instead of keeping it in their holding retention ponds.

Save the Salt org has more info on that.

There was a movement to pump water from the lake through a proposed pipeline. That won't happen if the lake is drying up.
A local college student's mother told me they are concerned about the dry minerals from the lake being blown into the air, that seems the same as the salt flats to me, just closer to town.
