What's a good brand of Ethanol fuel treatment ?
« on: August 16, 2022, 06:03:50 PM »
I 'usually'  ::) run a tank of fuel through my bike at least every 3 weeks;I've been using the stuff in the blue bottle: star*tron from star brite company every once in a while. They say it helps with "phase separation" of the water coming out of E10 gasoline;is there a better additive ? These vintage bikes and small engines in weed eaters, chainsaws, etc. w/ carbs. need a good product.  :) I can't get Ethanol-free gasoline here in Ca.  :(
I wonder if that Sta-Bil 360 is any better? I know the E10 fuel does allow water to get into the carbs. when it separates from the fuel while sitting..
Do any of you have some experience with this ?

Watched a comparison between Seafoam, and Techron in the black bottle........

Techron won out.

A StarTron bottle will last for long.
I bought one at my nearby shop with dyno.  I have not tried it yet. Bikes gets V-Power with max 5% ethanol, maybe less in reality.

He recommended it for E10 fuels during the winter. He used it for all kind of engines when parked for a longer period.
Lawnmovers, snowmobile, bikes.

Did not cost that much either.
Red Line fuel additive cost much more and last for a few tanks only.

Wow.  Just checked pure gas.org for ya...only 24 stations in all of California with real gasoline.  By comparison, Michigan has 646.  I rarely buy ethanol for my bikes anymore.
If it works good, it looks good...

Yep, that's another thing........only buy non-ethanol gas in all my carbed engines, even my mini truck 1984 Dodge D50.

I keep 2, 5 gallon cans all the time.

I actually have no clue how much ethanol is in the fuel I buy around here (northwest Indiana) but it can't be much because I have yet to have an issue with it. I've tried startron and other witches brews and found no difference so anymore the only time I put anything in my gas is some stabil when I store the bikes in the winter. During riding season I may put some seafoam in as a preventive measure from time to time but for the most part, my bikes don't set around long enough during riding season for the gas to go bad.

Bailgang, Scott;
Put gas in a graduated cylinder so you know and can measure how much. Add 10% water by volume and the ethanol will combine with the water and be visible at the bottom. Any excess water won't have alcohol to combine with and you can see the separation of the three liquids. Measuring it might be difficult but it will pull the ethanol out of the fuel. Problem is with ethanol gone your octane drops as the ethanol is used as an octane booster.

I can get octane booster at the local auto parts store

Ethanol absorb water which is part of the problem.
The ethanol laced fuel might be OK from the beginning. But who knows how much water it will absorb in the gasstation's tank?
Condense water.

If the water only could be removed and measured.

I understand the science of that but adding water to my fuel seems counter-intuitive. I'll sneak into the airport and get more av gas.

Ethanol free fuel is not available near me in western MA.  I’ve driven to VT, where a station pumps ethanol free, but it takes half a tank of gas round trip.   So I was excited to learn how to get the ethanol out of the gas at local stations.
I’ll be trying this for my bike and other small engines, even my MGB.   I’ve ordered a graduated bottle to test the ethanol content before and after removing the ethanol.  I’ll then add a measure of seafoam and mystery oil to preserve and enhance.

Recognize that the Ethanol is also an octane booster, removing it drops your octane and you have to restore that octane level for your engine's safe operation...
Predetonation of the lower octane fuel can be harmful...
