Finished a cb500 k1
« on: August 21, 2022, 02:33:54 AM »
A month ago I bought a new project which needed some TLC to become a true classic again.

This time it was a Honda cb500 k1 from 1972 which had one owner since 1985. He already bought the bike in the current shape and just loved how comfortable it was, although I must admit the seating position was not very nice in my opinion, it just didnt work.

The bike was fitted with a cb750 gas tank, a cb750f1/f2 giuliari king&queen seat (which the PO patched on the rear to cover the hole for the tail section), some Hella high beam lights, GL1000 tail lights, panniers and a fairing. I guess the intention was to mimic a small Goldwing...

It did have a very nice blue paint on there but sadly it just didnt work for me as it wasn't original and it had the wrong tank.
But underneath all this there was a very good frame and engine and it looked superb.
It just didn't run when I picked it up, the PO didnt understand it and thought it would be the spark plug leads. It turned out it was just a clogged carb from sitting for 2 years and not running. Easy fix and she was running on all four again.

So I bought it like this

After calling around I was able to score a really nice original paint set, with original emblems on there.
I also got some original shocks, brand new Busso reproduction exhausts, a DSS seat, and a couple of covers for the engine and forks and a lot of small things. And after a couple of weeks I finally got my hands on a pair of original k1 fork ears. So after a month it now looks like this:

I think it looks 100 times better now, very pleased with the result.

And on to the next project!

Yes it's hard to improve on the original look. Lucky to pick up the paint set, they seem super rare in Europe. Is it a set or are the covers different colour? Hard to tell from pics.
Were the Busso pipes better value than the CMSNL/DSS pipes?
Looks the part now.

That Turned out very great Nick. And yes those Busso pipes look great. Did they come in one piece or are the mufflers slip on?

Thank you! Just like the original pipes, the Busso ones are in one piece.

Thank you. It is one set, indeed hard to see on pictures. The CMSNL and DSS pipes were sold out, so this was the perfect time to try out the Busso ones, they are a litte bit less expensive. These come with all the brackets where as CMSNL and DSS deliver without the brackets. So price wise they are similar, value is similar. Very pleased with them.

Nice bike, but I too am wondering about the side covers, the light must really do a number on how the color looks.

Do you have the direct link to the pipe set? I've looked at their site before and found it difficult to find the link.

Nice bike, but I too am wondering about the side covers, the light must really do a number on how the color looks.
you will see that quite frequently with a number of Honda's candy colors.  The color seems to fade at a different rate on the plastic covers as opposed to the metal of the tank, not to mention that the tank generally sees more infrared, nor were the covers and tank painted by the same painter, at the same time, with the same batch of paint at the factory...probably.
If it works good, it looks good...

Nice work, I was on the hunt for an original body kit as well for a while....settled on new paint instead. Those pipes look nice, is that a 4into1 seat? They sure didnt try to stay true to the original shape and form but it looks like you will be sitting up much higher and have much more of a softer ride.

Nice job, enjoy.
