the 400 carbs look bad but no real corrosion on the bodies but one of the metal bows that fit on the main jets was eaten through and there is just all the mac and cheese powder and well I don't know if this was a thing back in the day but the main jets have some stuff that looks to be wax around them like someone did a solder with wax? I dont know but if it worked then hey.

I imagine the tank had it's share of rust inside  :o

ah you had to bring up the tank! yeah I gotta get a barrel of that evaporust ordered later to get on both of the tanks. luckily one of them is already black and the wife likes the black on it so it can stay but I gotta see how the inside is going to turn out. the other tank has a 70's custom faded paint job on it that I don't mind but the inside smelled like varnish and rust too. after this build i might get the other parts bike worked on and just keep it like that but that of course is in the we will see future.

Don't overlook using POR-15 on the tanks after the de-rust operation. It will 100% prevent it from happening again.

thanks Hondaman I don't want to have to do the tank thing again after these any time soon.
when I get there Ill definitely take pics of the before and after.
they did not look to have any holes as they both were still filled with fuel but im sure after cleaning them both up I will see.

more work on the carbs throttle bodies.
alot of gunk in the sleeves and in between the shaft and needle clip holder.
after spraying with the carb cleaner and let if all collect in a bucket I had to go back again and see what I missed.
going to buy more carb cleaner and do it again.

Using something like vinegar really invites pinholes as it eats all metal as well as rust...evaporust type products only chelate the rust which doesn't impact any good metal. Not that pinholes aren't possible. A liner on a tank with more than light rust is generally a good idea I think and agree with HondaMan, POR or Caswell's are the best liners I think. POR being very picky about prep...
You must be sure it is dried out extremely well, you do not want to capture water/moisture under a liner.

opened up all the throttle bodies checking each on to see which are the best.
both the titled and donor carbs had someone in them with the heads wore down.
glad I had my filed down phillips ready to go to town.
all the needles were oem. guess they couldnt get to them and set "im sure they are ok".

thanks RAFster122s it is always good getting the +1 with you, hondaman and the others on these type of things.
I had the fun of giving that vinegar bath a try when I was doing the 550 tanks. after pouring it out I made the baking soda potion after pouring all the vinegar out instead of having it ready made. when I went to pour it into the tank I saw all the flash rust and thought to myself holy hell did the vinegar even do anything!? only after reading the directions about it did it finally work. glad It came out okay cause Im sure I would have two holey tanks if I didn't double check that thread.
I will not be doing that again. definitely going the evaporust option and see how it turns out.

on those titled throttle bodies where either the PO or the mechanic who put all the gasket silicone on the engine popped them up with a bit or something stupid.

I got most of the gunk and grime off the bodies and rack without dissassemble all the way. it just kept coming off with each spray.

I was checking about that 400f clutch cover.
going to take it out of storage so I can fab up a clutch adjust cover for it (finned of course) and slap it on.
I guess the next up is the electrical.

How many 'road ready' racks of carbs will you be able to build from those others?

the other two sets should be rebuildable.
I figure as I finish the 350 up I will go through both sets, try and learn the ultrasonic clean process for them
replace bits and pieces that are old from used stuff on ebay
