the other method i've used is a hot plate with a pot i dont care about and fill it halfway or so with a water/dawn dishliquid mixture and bring the water to a near boil. gets parts nice and grease free. i also have used a crockpot filled with oil, turn it on low and put my new chain in it....................or new bearings. let it go overnight. i learned that trick from my bmw instructor at ami.

You guys are f'ing C-R-A-Z-Y for washing parts in the same machine that you also wash dishes in THAT YOU EAT OFF OF.

I shudder at the heavy metal from the parts or residual used motor oil or other toxic nasties lingering on your plates and cookware . . . .This is NOT just the Mrs. is being a nag nonsense, this is your health here for f"cks sake!!!

P L E A S E  buy an old washing machine for use in the garage if you really feel the need to wash parts in a dishwasher. . . also ummmm, you DO know there are these devices you can buy for your shop called "parts washers" that you like, are supposed to wash parts in, or something, right?    ::)

All kidding aside, I don't see that it would cause a health risk. You get oil on your fingers don't you? You wash them then eat fried chicken. The dishwashing soap has bleach and other stuff in it to completely breakdown the grease and oil. It was made to do that. Now, I heard of a guy that used Pennzoil 30W in his chili recipe. Texas I believe. He won with it too. Only, they made him give back the cash award when they heard he used motor oil.

I bet they were. Only in Texas haha, I guess that explains a lot. It reminds me of Texas Chainsaw Massacre when the killers put some human flesh in the chili contest. I guess it is better for you than cancer.

Yeah but it's not going to break down residual heavy metals and chemicals, of which there can be a lot in used motor oil. If you want to go ahead and ingest everything from cadmium to chromium, go for it - I'll pass for damn sure. And hell no, I don't have oil on my fingers and then go eat - I wear nitrile gloves when doing oil changes and wash thoroughly afterwards.

I just don't know why you would want to.  ..it's insane as there are many other ways to clean parts and if you just HAVE to use a dishwasher, get an old garage sale find.

This kind of thinking reminds me of the old mechanic guy I know that for 40+ years, worked on many cars and washed parts in his shop with no gloves and used solvents now banned by the EPA. I think he is on his 4th bone graft at the VA trying to salvage the dissolved away bones in his now barely functional hands.

"As efficient as modem engines are, the heat they generate still has a deleterious effect on motor oil. Heat causes a breakdown of additives and other key properties of oil. This breakdown creates acids and other contaminants such as dirt, dust and even rust, which make their way into the crankcase, along with small amounts of water and antifreeze. Add to this exhaust gases that leak past piston rings and you have contaminated oil that contains quantities of cadmium, aluminum, lead, steel, iron and chromium, along with scary-sounding arsenic and benzopyrene-real nasty stuff that you wouldn't want in your drinking water or in the fish you eat."

"More than half of the six million gallons of used motor oil that do-it-yourself oil changers generate in Massachusetts each year ends up being poured on the ground, dumped down a sewer or storm drain or tossed in the trash. Used motor oil contains petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals which can contaminate drinking water supplies and food chains and cause physical damage to aquatic life. Used motor oil that is poured into a sewer can also limit MWRA's ability to use sludge as fertilizer. Throughout the U.S., improperly discarded automotive batteries release tons of lead and sulfuric acid into the environment each year."

Guilty as charged. I'm old school, meaning when I first started wrenching, they didn't have all the glove protection they have now days. I still don't wear gloves. I use a cream hand protectant that kind of soaks in and is supposed to offer some barrier of protection. For the record, I wouldn't wash my parts in the DW. I just use an old pan and brush, then blow dry.

lol. .. .. .  yeah, that's part of why I wear gloves as well as turning a wrench being hell on the nails, too.

I don't always though. . . sometimes you just need maximum dexterity in confined areas and electrical work.

By the way, I highly recommend the latex/nitrile blend gloves you can get at Harbor Freight. They fit a lot better than the pure nitrile ones and yet are much stronger than the regular latex ones and far more resistant to chemicals. (they are also available in medium which can be hard to find sometimes - most hardware stores have nothing but L, XL, etc. - annoying for gals like me with smaller hands)

You just need to "man up". Use it, just make sure she's not in when you do, and give it a wash afterwards empty. It's only the same as using the oven to cure parts you've sprayed with heat resistant spray. But be warned, you need at least an hour to get rid of the smell before she comes home ::) ;D

It won't hurt the dishwasher, and dishwashing detergent is really good for cutting grease. I've cleaned a lot of parts, no problems with the machine or the wife (not from THAT, at least...).
As for baking paint in the oven, though... big trouble. The house stunk (bad) for days and the oven still reeks a little. I would improvise something or use an old stove - outside - for that.

Once again, I must point out that the dishwasher may be designed to cut (food) grease but not petroleum oil and grease and also will do nothing for residual heavy metals left behind. The oven is even worse with all sorts of paint aromatics left behind in an area where you later prepare food?  yukkkkkk. .. . .

ha ha ha.  .  "man up" if you want but I guess that term means being foolish with your health (and the health of your lady and/or family) and ignoring the information widely available all over the internet (from reliable sources), regarding the toxicity of used motor oil, paint fumes, etc?

Sounds like utter foolishness to me when you could easily buy cheap yard sale dishwashers and/or ovens for placement in the shop, for these purposes.

ha ha ha.  .  "man up"
I've noticed those two words precede an awful lot of unwise and/or unsafe acts...
I'll say this: I HAVE used our kitchen sink... um... in the apartment... because it's stainless steel.  That + hot water + simplegreen and/or dish washer soap (fewer suds, see what you're doing better) then drain the whole shebang and rinse it all with super-hot water (again) so the parts are hot enough to steam water vapor off on their own, then hand-dry (or shake 'em off) and put 'em on a waiting towel.  Done.  That way, too, I know all the little crusty crap is *outta there* and I'm not trusting the quality of my carb cleaning to our old-ass dishwasher.

Way easier to clean accumulated grease/gas scum out of the sink with some Comet than to tear apart the dishwasher and clean those screens.

oh and that stuff is probably more toxic than McDonald's, too. ;D
