Using the Dishwasher!!!!!
« on: March 07, 2007, 01:10:03 PM »
Ive had a look at the previous posts but cant seem to find any conclusions about using the dishwasher to clean things.

1.  Does it give a good labour free result?
2.  Does it do the dishwasher any harm?
3. Will it make the dishwasher smell?
4. Will the salt cause any corrosion?
5. Will The economy 35 degree cycle be enough?
6. should I take the dinner things out first?
7. Is saying " I bought the dishwasher, why cant I use it for my stuff" an acceptable reply after being caught.
8. Are they complicated to use?
9. Is a concours bike likely to be worth much in a divorce settlement?

I sure woiuldn't wash anything greasy that way, unless you and your scoot plan to move out soon, WITHOUT the mrs!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I don't know, I wouldn't do it.  My diswasher was too expensive to tear it up on purpose.

I knew a guy years ago that collected and restored "300" series Chryslers. When his wife caught him using the DW in the kitchen for cleaning parts he simply bought one for his shop. Problem solved. I don't remember exactly what he did but the parts cleaned up real nice.

There are several good cleaning tips in the Tricks and Tips forum, concerning Simple Green, oven cleaner, acids, etc.

I've ran parts through the dishwasher. Only AFTER they were beadblasted and degreased. They were already pretty clean but one cycle through in the pots and pans mode with regular detergent made them sparkle.

No damage to the dishwasher that I could tell. I did run it a cycle empty to make sure nothing hung around.

A guy I know used his dishwasher as a parts washer for outboard parts. Worked like a charm.... (Of course, he was single)

You could probably use the diswashing detergent to soak the stuff and get the same result. This will keep the little lady from cracking your skull in your sleep or waking up with your nasty bits tied in a knot. :o.

buy an old used one and stick it in the garage, better yet build a workbench around it.

Have you ever put anything aluminum in your dishwasher? Try it before you do your bike parts! The trisodium phosphate (which is the main cleaning agent) will leave it with a very dull finish!

I let her cook the salmon in the dishwasher, she lets me clean my stuff.

Most I've done so far is the carbs, it cleaned all the muck off (even inside the float bowls) - it doesn't leave them nice and shiny though (even if you use that stuff that makes glasses sparkle in the ads). I used the standard cycle.

I used the dishwasher to clean my valve cover and cylinders. It did get them clean but they now have a dull grey color- I hope I can polish this color out. If not, I now have new look for my CB. :P

along with the dishwasher you might as well buy an oven for baking on paint,  warming up various parts etc.   I know with my wife she would  buy the cot and tell me to move  in to the garage since I allready spend so much time there.

Actually... I've used my oven to bake painted parts several times.

But the parts cleaning will always be done with can carb cleaner or paint bucket of carb cleaner.

That stuff works.... well!

I just ran this by the better half and the answer was not only NO!!!!!! BUT HELL NO!!!!!!!!!! So I guess I will still be doing mine the hard way. Although if I ever get a garage built I might buy one and put it in there. It sounds like a killer idea.
