Barn find '78 750f, 240 miles, NC
« on: September 11, 2022, 01:59:47 PM »
A friend of a friend knew that I used to work on bikes and connected me about this one today. Their father passed and they are trying to clear out his farm.

I sold all of my bikes a few years ago because I had to move out of my warehouse and didn't want to move them again, so I'm not up to date on the market.

I haven't seen it in person yet, I was just sent some photos.

It looks like it was ridden a few times when new, and has been parked since '78. Most of the usage stickers look like they are still on it.

The tank is off, I'm guessing someone was going to drain the gas and try to get it going, no one has any idea when this happened.

They just want to sell the bike, but I don't know what a fair offer is, and I'm not sure when I would have the time to work on it.

If anyone could provide some guidance it would be appreciated.

May not be a good comparison, but I just purchased a 78 K model for 800.  It appears to be in about the same shape, except mine has 22k miles and a few oil leaks.  But all parts are there, needs exhaust and carbs rebuilt, caliper on front rebuilt, master cylinder rebuilt and etc.

Paint is decent but not great, tank looks ok inside, had been sealed many years ago.

Good Luck.

Essentially a brand new bike that needs basic work to run , i can guarantee no one will find a lower mile specimen, has the break in sticker to boot .

If it was mine i would clean it up and sell it on bring a trailer , it would get an easy 5k

Interesting find. I can see the handlebars have been changed to higher height etc., not enough good pictures to see it all. Has a title and the engine is still free ? Getting that gas tank will make a difference in the overall value. I would start by asking them how much they want for it first and see if they respond or has that already been asked by you ?

its literally 750 F super sport get #$%*ed price season, figures you find a very good model during one of the worst price slumps for these models.

My advice is offer something under 1k...its in nice shape so its worth more than that....but, the market.

Bike that has been sitting will need work...you are gonna need a G note to get it road ready.

Thats a CB750F2, they are known for bad exhaust guides and carbs being the worst to keep clean and work on.
If its been stood that long you must expect to rebuild all the calipers and masters, total strip and clean carbs, fork stanchions may well have pitted chrome, tyres will be shot and engine, although low moles, may well need a strip and rebuild.
They are not the most desirable model of 750 so not the highest value, only you can work out what your time and effort will cost along with parts.

The last picture has the gas cap showing lots of rust, so it was parked with gas in it....... the tank is most likely toast, very hard to find a good one, let alone a replacement NOS tank, so that is a big factor in price.

Randakk just got $12k a couple weeks ago for his mostly stock F1, so you might get well over $5k for a super clean low mileage, fully sorted F3.

All that said, if I were selling a bike like this, I would realistically expect to get $1000-$1200 for it since the engine condition is a big unknown. Super low miles would suggest a strong engine, but sitting for over 40 years is not good for an engine.

That's debatable. Not desirable because parts can be harder to find and the issues with the head. What they are desirable for being is the last year sohc super sport also being somewhat rare. I wouldn't be surprised if some prime examples start going for close to $20k at auction in the future.

Probably the lowest mileage 78f in the world. That alone makes it valuable. I would try to own it.

I know of a 78F with 620 miles that was stored inside for years. They have been asking $8500 USD for two years with no takers.

The head issues are part of it, the Comstars are also part. A lot of people just don't like the look of those wheels.

Personally like the look of the Comstars, so they aren't a negative in my book.
