What's the best epoxy/glue to use on a carburetor ?
« on: September 02, 2022, 09:43:02 AM »
I have an old Honda XL enduro and I want to repair a problem with the top of the OEM PD carb. body(not in the bowl)which requires me to replace the threaded top by cutting off a good one from a parts carb and then attaching the good one to my No Longer Available carb which I like.
I'm cutting the threaded section of the carb body at the top of my slide bore off just above the machined part of the slide bore so it doesn't interfere with the movement of the slide;it's real close to the threads. This is where the top-cap screws on with the cable/needle.
I know JBWeld makes many different types of epoxy products..

Pictures might help with this.

Jb would hold up.  But there's nothin like nicely fitted threads.

I tried pics.. I don't have a hosting site yet.

Yeah Man,that loose screw-down carb top is leaning-out my engine and making it run hot..
I Will fix this thing !

There's another product from JBWeld I just heard of from someone called 'Tank weld', I'll take a look at the reviews.

I just called the JB-Weld company in Tx.,they told me about their fine products;they also warned me about Ethanol gasoline and said their products are only a temporary solution if Ethanol gasoline is used.  :(

The top of the slide tower won't be immersed in fuel so I'm going to JB it.

There's nothing like the original

Have you already replaced the o-rings in the carb top?

Haven't encountered a lean running issue with the caps on the norton vm's - even with the cable noodle setup.

Yes,the rubber seals have been replaced.
The undersize threads at the top of the slide tower/carb body are the problem.

I'd wrap it with teflon tape and start the threads carefully.

Don,this carb was defective from the Keihin factory, imo.
I tried uploading pics but not able to yet..
The threads are in good cond, not stripped;they sure are cast in shallow to the O.D. of the slide tower though,to where the top threaded cap can't get any purchase to tighten it up.
The top of the slide tower O.D. with the threads is a bit undersize and the threads were cast onto that undersize outer carb body;I think tape will help, but it's just temporary.
I've lived with this carb and a loose fit and resulting poor performance ever since I purchased it off Ebay in 2016'.. I wish I had a miniature, precision tig welder to nicely bond this donor threaded section on.
I'll give JB Weld my best with prep and go for that.

That sounds like K0 carbs, you must be very careful screwing the tops on, and they are easy to cross thread especially when you add the rubber gaskets to the top. Most of them don't even have the gaskets.

Don,when it had the old(thin)rubber gasket in the top cap it was about an 1/8 of a turn better..  :D but now since I installed the fresh rubber gasket, those threads won't work anymore.
There is a big difference when the cap screws down tight on these compared to when it runs 'less tight'.. it pulls air from up top, when it should be pulling air through the rear inlet only.
The result is a poor running engine that doesn't idle well plus I can't adjust the pilot screw to get it to idle consistently.

This nice PD 66A Keihin stock carb is getting that set of fresh threads up top;I will be sure to prep both parts very well before using JB.The thing might not look as nice anymore with a bead of JB Weld around the base of the screw-down cap but that's what it's getting. I'll be sure to take my time and align everything properly and clean it all inside the bore so it's nice and smooth inside.

I'm waiting to hear from a buddy in W. PA. today who works full time on restoring fuel tanks for motorcycles(Moyer's Fuel Tank renu);he knows about fuel related stuff and he said he'll research it online and let me know if he sees a better product than JB Weld by today, otherwise tomorrow it's getting JB.

There's another fellow on a forum who recommended I rough-up(stiff,small wire brush?)around the threads, then use JB Weld around the threads & let it set-up for a bit then put just a little parrafin wax evenly into the threads of the top-cap then use the top cap to gently thread down onto the 'not too cured' JB Weld.. I don't think he's done this before, but it seems like a good idea..

I love my Seal-All when I have fuel/carb problems but still not sure exactly what your trying to do.  :D  Works great for fixing boots and tons of other stuff also, I always have a tube around !!

Thanks Eric,is that seal-all best for rubber, etc.?  Sorry for not being able to upload pics of it;I used to be able to but.. not this time?

I'm intent on bonding a piece of cast aluminum carb body from a donor carb onto my carb.
The threaded section where the needle/cable attaches on top of the slide tower of my carb on the XL dirtbike engine is bad on mine:I cut a good one off a parts carb and want to bond it to mine, after I cut-off my bad threaded section.

I've never attempted this before:I took it to a welder and he said no,so if I could solder it on and it would work.. just don't know how to accomplish this.I have other carbs i can run on this bike but I like this one the best.
I'll give it my best.  :)

Well, the carb. repair has been accomplished:I used the standard JB Weld 2-tube epoxy.
The temps will be up to 113 degrees tomorrow.I plan on putting this repaired carb inside the cab of my old car all day with the windows up,that should cure the JB Weld real nice.
