Topic: stock wheels too heavy, what wheels for racing? 18" required

looking for help, my stock wheels on my 550 race bike are simply way too heavy. Rear is stock 550 hub, SS spokes, Borrani 18x3" alum wheel, drum brakes. Front is Yamaha XS 650 hub, SS spokes, Excel rim 18x2.15".

Research and I find early GSXR stuff might fit. Front needs to have 17mm axle, rear can be 17 or 20.

if anyone has wheels to sell, please let me know.

Some food for thought with the Marvic Magnesium Campagnolo wheels almost certainly being the lightest option.

Are you limited to spoke wheels or can you run mags? If spoke only then the best combo for a budget is front hubs on the front and rear. Better yet is quick change flat track hubs front and rear. If mags are allowed then anything from Mavic or Dymag are great choices.

rules limit rear wheel to 3" wide maximum.

I ran a CB front hub, but with lightweight disc carriers and discs, with 17mm axle, then swapped to a Yamaha front from an RD, but same as several others as it is a bit narrower and allows dual disc in a narrower tree than the Honda hub due to spoke flange spacing. Rear is a somewhat rare spoked  hub from a RD400 with disc and small cush drive, again with lightweight carrier and disc. Discs are non drilled as per the rules in our class in Scandinavia. We must run spokes. If you can/want to run mags, aftermarket magnesium are of course the lightest, but I know the '86/87 GSXR 18 mags are pretty light compared to most aftermarket aluminum. I freind removed his factory Martin mags form his Martin KZ from late 70s and replaced with the GSXR mags as they were the legal 18" and much lighter. He is one of the fastest around so it must work.

A CB350 twin or 400F hub is much lighter than the 550 boat anchor. I used a 350, then decided to try to shed a little more and used a CB front hub in the rear, with my own cush adaptor and a small early TZ rotor. After trying to be as light as possible, it ended up weighing the same as what I had!

I'll try to find the exact difference in weight between rear hubs and get back to you, I have that somewhere.

How about early CBR600 wheels ?
They're both 17" although the rear is over 3"; the front is 2.50x17.
