« on: September 07, 2022, 05:18:04 PM »
I have found a 1978 CB750f (barn find) in good condition. It is not factory paint but looks good. mostly stock. it does not run however it turns over with kick starter. I have offered $1500 am I high, low or in the ballpark he  has the factory airbox

Thats an F2 and as such will almost certainly need valve guides and a lot of work on the carbs, thats just to start

Market is all over the place. In the before times I would think $1500 is a little high for a later model that doesn't run, but probably in the ballpark for a fair price these days. I look at what I can do easily enough... Carb rebuild is cheap and easy for me, engine rebuild a bummer but not crazy, but I'm not set up for bodywork and paint currently. Not a bad deal at $1500, for mid-Atlantic region. Dreamers would ask $3k+, but those are the type that see a pretty bike that sat for a long time and don't understand it's a complete rebuild.

I think 1500 purchase and another 1500 into it you'll be happy.

With 750F bikes its not hard to insult someone if you are going by the market, especially right now.

What Bryan says, it depends on the mileage but very likely it needs a head job - new valve guides and valves.

Anything over 10,000 and they needed valve guides, dont ask me how i know, there was an IOM policeman in the 70's who knows as well!

Get rid of the pods
1500 seems ok but getting it back to being pretty nice will be a lot more than 1500 more.

$1500 is a deal.  Keep in mind the "cheapest bikes can be the most expensive bikes"!

What is the deal with that black plastic rear fender extension? Thought that was Euro only?

That fender was on all of them, but a lot of people took them off and lived with the stipe of crud up the back

as to the fender, in American market...my F2 still has it and I have only ever seen it on an F2.  F0, F1 never had it, in America anyway.  But Bryan J ia certainly correct that if you ride a cb750f without one in rain or muddy conditions, crud stripe is getting on your back.  Perhaps was added to the parts list in response to F0, F1 owner complaints?

Ya'll are a bunch of cheapskates  ;) $1500 is more than a fair price for this bike even if its used for parts. This bike in particular is getting more desirable and harder to find solid ones. Make sure to send the head off to get rebuilt ASAP.

Yeah, but the F1 is a metal one, where the factory put the same rubber flap underneath as the earlier K bikes.

OK, I need to look closer next time I visit my friend that owns that F1.
But I recall that he might have had the mudflap on as well, before vehicle inspection taking it out on the road after long sleep.  Photo taken before.
It had only 15000 km on the meter.

The purchase price is just the beginning. Then comes the large hole in the funds bucket when the bug bites you and you want it all to look and work top notch.

What about the no original paint whoever did it did a nice Job with the paint and graphics. That would be the last thing done as I want it factory black and orange. I think she will run with just a carb clean. If I get it 1st adjust cam chain tension and valves clean /rebuild carbs installing the factory airbox while carbs are off. rebuild brakes adjust clutch oil cables then new tires and see what I have

Paint will cost in the $1200-$1800 if paying a professional that knows these bikes.

I saw a really beautiful F2 on this forum painted in a deep glossy candy red. A little bit CBX1000-79 red.
Polished and chromed parts. Still stock look, but better details.

Find that post for ideas.

Looks like a nice rider as is for sure if it doesn't have any major hidden mechanical issues. Total resto starts to add up quickly.

I will paint with the original colors and scheme. I paint most of my projects but in this case i will have a buddy that paints aircraft shoot it. I guess you could call it a rider restore.
