Weird Science?
« on: September 11, 2022, 04:37:57 AM »
Yesterday I was replacing a wheel bearing on our 40 year old Yamaha G2 Golf/Farm cart. The hub is very basic design, 4 X 4” stud centres, with and inner and outer bearing inside. I pop off the plastic sealing cap, remove the split pin, remove the spindle nut and washer, and remove the hub.

Close inspection, shows two sealed bearings. Closer inspection and I notice the space under the cap (looking at the outer bearing) is filled with TINY (very, very tiny) little spiders. They are so small, I almost didn’t spot them. Looking at the inside of the rim, I see more moving around!! The plastic cap has a very small hole to allow air out as it heats up, but other than that, this is a sealed, dark space. No moisture, nothing...... It also all rotates at a hell of a speed, for long periods of time, when my grand children visit! What the heck makes these little guys want to live there???

I have had them making a home in the purge valve filter for the charcoal cannister on my old Expidition.  Caused it to trip a fault code. Rotten little bastages!

What amazed me was the number of them! In that tiny space I bet there was +50!
