1975 CB550F - New Coils on Factory Mounts Won't Fit Under Tank
« on: September 16, 2022, 10:18:00 AM »
First, of what I will assume will be many questions as I start the re-assembly after full tear down of my 1975 CB550F. I installed updated 5ohm Coils on the factory brackets. When mounted properly (Plug wires poitned down and toward front of bike) the tank won't fit over them. I have them currenlty mounted upside down (plug wires pointed up). It allows for the tank to be mounted, but I am concerned about wires rubbing with vibration. Pic included. I have to have them mounted incorrectly. Anyone have any advise or a pic of thier coil swap mounted??

Can't you simply make new mounting brackets?
Or do a search for the OEM type coils, they aren't that hard to come by, and will keep you running for the next 40 years like the old ones no problemo.

indeed. for plug-n-play simplicity, get the OEM coils.
otherwise you have to fabricate your own mounts. it doesn't have to be difficult. i made some up from some alu rod for myself. but my coils are different from yours, you'd need to figure out yourself how you need to fit them.

what do you mean with "updated". there's nothing wrong with OEM coils in normal, stock use. sounds like you bought some trouble for no benefit?

I like OEM style coils. But, is there a reason why you don't have the wires pointing down?

Is it possible you have misunderstood the way brackets and coils are supposed to be mounted? Maybe someone can post a pic of how they are supposed to be positioned. Or find a pic.

This is how they're supposed to be positioned on a CB550K. Can you post another pic of yours that offers us a better view?

+1...why did you change the coils?  I've never had an issue with them.

I just read on the German forum how a member there had renewed both coils only to find out it was a malfunctioning $ 8,- condenser after all...

Those are the same shape as Dyna coils and plenty of people run yhrm. Can you not flip them over so the wires are pointing down?
