Sparty’s Riding Season Ending Injury
« on: March 07, 2007, 04:00:19 PM »
Well guys, I really did it this time.  It looks like I won’t be on my bike for more than a few months.  I suffered an freak and unfortunate accident last week.  I tore/ruptured the inner head of my left bicep along with the pectoral minor muscles.  Currently, the prognosis is a 6 month recovery after the surgery to reattach both muscles, if it can be done successfully.

At the moment I am scheduled for a second MRI tomorrow morning at 7:15 which will determine how extensive the damage is.  If it is moderate, which my orthopedic surgeon thinks it is, the surgery and recovery should allow me near normal function once again.  Physical therapy is the longest part of getting back to riding.  I won’t be able to lift, pull, or push anything heavy for a few months as I heal.  That basically means that I will be twiddling my thumbs throughout the entire riding season.  Pretty depressing as I was planning to bring my engine up to Mike Rieck for modding in the next week or so. >:(

The injury happened when I attempted to lift a very heavy chest off of the back of a pick-up truck (I was helping a friend move).  They way I grabbed it and yanked it in a awkward position did the trick.  I heard it tear, it sounded like ripping cloth and then I felt the muscles retract into my chest and lower bicep.  I would bring the engine to Mike, but I can't lift anything, not even my arm at the moment.

Thanks for the get well wish.

Damn dude, that totally sucks.  Hope you recover quickly and that things can be made correct again.

Quick hijack:  Is that your Trail 70 in your avatar?  Looks GORGEOUS!!!  I'm rebuilding one myself right now.  Debating on perfect stock resto or a "mad-max" rebuild.

Sorry to hear that , Sparticus. If I lived closer to you I'd transport your engine. Any members close by? Hope you get better soon. I hate the thought of you missing all that riding time!

I'll feed your hijack - That was my Trail 70.  I sold it stupidly.  It was a full resto project and it took me five years of on and off work.  I sourced all new Honda NOS parts for the resto and had House of Kolor match the paint.  I sold it to a guy in California and he put it in his cycle shop window.

Sorry to hear about your injury. Make sure you don't rush your recovery. Six months could drag on if it doesn't heal.
Good luck.

Thanks Rush,  I was hoping that my buddy, who I helped move, might offer to help me get the engine to Mike.

You said it Keith.  I rushed my ankle injury five years ago and it still hurts - I learned from that one.

That's one nasty injury.  I've very sorry to hear it.  I hope you recover well and quickly.

Don't rush the recovery.  Work all the way with the physical therapists.  A good PT is super important for good recovery, and they usuallly know more about the nitty gritty of recovery than even the docs.

I hyper extended my knee several years ago and followed the doctors instructions but it never got better. Then I went to a different doctor. He told me to avoid steps for a while. Now I'm about 95% recovered.

Ok Sparty, here's 2 cents from a record holding weight lifter.
Of course that was in 1977/78  or so. Not official because I didn't
attend the Nationals Since I was steroid free. And back then the
top 5 in my class nationally were not. I lifted in the 148's then,
and benched 330, squatted 600, deadlifted 650.
I've torn a few muscles:)

I also did gymnastics and one of the fellows I trained a bit with was a high Diver,
he completely tore his pecs from his sternum on a dive. Seems going into the
water a diver could reach out and grab the water and pull himself in for less
entry splash. His arms spun backwards ripping his chest lose. By the time I worked out
with him he was pretty well recovered.

Anyway, you will recover. Sometimes hospital physical therapy is not the best however.
If I was you, I'd listen to the docs about the recovery time needed after they
sew you back up then come up with a weight lifting program that targets your
injury. Light weight curls to start coupled with light weigh flys (real light weights).
You should also incorperate bench press which will help you sitting on
your bike for long rides. Again, light weights.

Don't even start with the weights until you have comfortably regained your complete range
of motion through isometric exercises.

I'm no expert but all the above has worked for me in similar circumstances.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and don't count yourself out on the
Bike for the summer yet!

I PM'd Art earlier and told him if he can get some friends to load up the engine and drive down with a buddy I'm sure I can get andy750, his friend Chris (Frostypuck) and Benazure to help out. It would be a great oppurtunity for a little get together and possibly take Art's mind off of the injury. ;)

I will be driving back a forth to Boston each week starting in May if all goes well. I think Mike's place is somewhere near my route. Unfortunately I live in New York, so there would be some  logistics to work out. I tore a calf muscle a few years ago and it took quite a while to heal, and it did heal completely. Please accept my wishes for a fast and complete recovery.

Real sorry to hear of your misfortune there Sparty.......By all means......do what everyone here is telling you and don't push it. Nothing is worse than aggravating an injury that was starting to heal up. You might miss out on riding this season but if you aren't careful, you might miss the next one also. There should be plenty of things to keep you occupied while you heal up. Take care dude!!!

Thanks for the well wishs guys.

Today, with my arm in a sling and on some pain meds, I am in Hershey PA with five of my wrestlers at the PIAA Individual State Championships (I coach varsity wrestling, and have been for 12 years).  This will certainly keep my mind off of my injury, especially if I can get a state champ out of my boys.

Rock,

Thanks for the advice.  I am no stranger to weight lifting and I know the benefits.  I was a collegiate wrestler and hit the weights regularly.  I wish that I was still consistent with my routine, but the way this injury happened, I don't think anything could have prevented it.  I'll be sure to rehab the repair with weights.

Sparty, I feel your pain and really it could happen to any of us. Anyway Im with Mike in that we will do whatever we can do help you out (Chris (Frostypuck) as well - he is sometimes down in NJ on business so maybe we could work out a pick up point or meet you halfway or something like that). Anyway you have options and we will do whatever we can to help. Just let us know!

Take you time and you`ll be riding again,
cheers
Andy

Injuries like this are bad. Even worse, it was right at the beginning of the riding season. So not only are you injured but you barely got to ride! :'(  I hope you heal fast and can get back in the saddle.

Hey Sparty,

Sorry to hear about your arm.  I hope you heal up soon and get back to 100%.  You have too awesome a bke to let it sit around long!  ;)

Curious who you wrestled for.  I wrestled for Virginia Tech... of course that was about 20 years ago.

Hey Sparty, no jumping up and down at the match when your boys win.

Remind me to tell you my Penn wrestling story from my college days some time :)
