Sander/polisher vs. buffer/waxer on Boats
« on: September 14, 2022, 02:02:05 PM »
I recently bought a sail boat and am prepping for the end of the season. From what I've been told it's a good idea to wax the boat before winter storage as a protective measure.

I'm thinking of getting one of these two bit I'm not sure which is better for waxing boats. I'd have to wax the hull meaning that I would have to hold it at shoulder height so the lighter the better. But, being able to hold the heavier one with both hands is a plus.

That angle one is probably the better of the two. The only downside is that it doesn't say if it is dual action. Unless you are experienced with a straight buffer you can easily burn nasty looking swirl marks. The dual action machines are much more forgiving. Even the Harbor Frieght d/a works pretty good. I have a Griots and love it. I think autozone carries that brand.

Another rookie mistake is thinking that lambs wool is a nice soft pad, it isn't. They are suprizingly aggressive, mix that with a non dual action polisher and you can do some real damage.
Maguire,'s has a forum you can learn alot from, plus some pretty decent products. But beware you may be headed down a very deep rabbit hole!  Just remember the smaller the machine both in size and amperage, the longer the job is going to take.

Good luck and remember" pics, or it didn't happen "!

Thanks so much for the reply. I'll probably go with the angle one then. The boat came with quite a bit of polishing compound and it's amazing the results that you can get.

I have polished cb750 forks, engine covers etc. Not something I enjoy.
