79 CB650 clutch need help
« on: October 01, 2022, 01:08:53 PM »
Hey all

So I’ve had the bike back now for about a week and a half. I’ve road it around town on a few trips. Rides like it should.
Figured today I would go for a longer trip. Bike was running very well. I was on highway coming back and pulled clutch lever in to down shift from 5th gear.  The clutch lever came right to handle bar.  Luckily I got it slowed down and got it to stall on side of highway.   I was able to get it moving in neutral while running and kick it into 1st gear and make it home.

The lower adjuster moves back and forth fine.

I do have a new clutch cable coming for it because I figured I’d replace it since it’s an old bike.

I’m hoping it’s just the cable that needs to be replaced.
The bike shop had freed the clutch plates up when he synced my carbs.

Any advice is appreciated

The lower adjuster moves back and forth fine.

By this, do you mean the clutch lifter arm moves fine? Or, just the adjuster? If the slack was adjusted all the way out of the cluch lifter, then it can go 'over-center' and get stuck there. This makes the clutch actuator arm #4 in the picture here become wimpy-feeling, like it isn't trying to lift anything. Then you must remove the cover and reset it, and not adjust ALL of the slack out of it the next time. ;)

See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Hi Mark
Thanks for responding.  I disconnected the cable from the adjuster.  It is wimpy feeling. I attached a photo of it

After closer inspection the adjuster can rotate 360 degrees clockwise and counter clockwise.  No position of it allows the clutch to work to put it in gear.  Will the reset fix this or might something be broke inside.
