Cleaning after honing...

https://www.enginelabs.com/news/what-i-learned-today-with-jeff-smith-cleaning-cylinder-walls/

I wonder how many shops who do boring and honing take the time to clean it up afterwards or if the assume that's the owner's job who is building the motor?

Valve grinding paste would be in this same camp...

If it's my engine, it'll get the thorough cleaning it needs.  Like the saying goes, "if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself."
Valve lapping compound is scary stuff if you think about it.  I can't imagine all the havoc it'll create if it gets on the crank journals and mains.   :o

I do an initial cleaning with brake cleaner or acetone in the shop, then bring it inside to my big laundry wash basin and use Dawn HD dish cleaner in hot water. Usually takes me three to five washes to get that white rags to come out white. I also struggle a bit with the iron cylinders flash rusting when I take them out of the hot wash. Compressed air might help. The heat naturally causes the water to evaporate fast but still have some issues here and there.

Then it’s a final clean with acetone or lacquer thinner. I give the cylinders, valve seats and guides a wipe with an oily rag if it’ll sit a while before startup. Which is basically always the case hah.

I wash engine parts in my solvent tank filled with real petroleum based solvent. Then I blow them dry with the air nozzle and rinse again with non-clorinated brake cleaner. I lost a cam and lifters due to grit on the first engine that I rebuilt. I didn't get the oil passages cleaned out enough. Ever since then I make sure all of the plugs get removed from the oil galleries so I can brush them out. The truth is that the rebuilder is ultimately responsible for the final cleaning before assembly.
