Rear Brake Adjustment Issues
« on: October 25, 2022, 05:53:10 AM »
Have a CB750K1. It had an extended swing arm which I changed to a stock one from 1974 CB750K. The extended swing arm had a longer brake stopper arm. I changed that to a shorter stock arm.
Putting on the brake pedal and rear arm and nothing lines up. Dots on both the pedal and rear arm are not close to being in the right spots.
I have attached a picture on how I have the rear brake rod/spindle installed. Is this correct?
Thanks!

hey man, that spring between the spline and the frame belongs on the outside for the the brake lever. That spring goes on the right side, outside of the frame then the brake lever goes on the spline..it should have a curved part that grabs the brake lever...almost cradle it. Take all that a part and slide the spline through the back like you've got it but with no spring, then on the other side slide the spring on, it should have two bent ends, one grabs the frame i think and the other cradles the brake lever, you will have to get the spring in place and then apply pressure to get the lever to cradle into it, then the bolt to keep the lever in place.

I attached a picture from the forum that was stated as being correct. So this is incorrect? Appreciate the help!

The arm and spring go on the inside, brake pedal on the outside.
Brake pedal or adjustment hold lever off swing arm.
Install rear lever so adjusting nut can screw onto brake rod.
Replace brake shoes if worn out.

The lower photo is correct. As you can see, the arm tucks in between the swingarm and the engine case. I'm sure you also loosened the axle to allow the brake plate to rotate into the normal position.

On my 11/70 K1 1067xxx there is an index mark on the spline almost at 12:00.
Does yours have this mark?
If so, I’d bet it’s about 9:00
At 12:00 it puts the inside lever in front of the swingarm, like Don says

When I put one together wrong once I was able take off the rear shocks and I lifted the swingarm up as high as I could and the bracket barely had enough room to slip into the correct position.

I believe I need to do this. The arm which connects to the rod is hitting the swing arm instead of sitting between the swing arm and the engine case. I'll give it a shot and report back.

Thanks to all!!!!!

I'm building one with a custom swingarm, I'm going to have to pull the swingarm bolt and lift the swingarm out of the way.

He’ll have to do the same. The swing arm must go up slightly to rotate the brake arm forward. I made this mistake so many times I now start every bare frame by installing these parts first!

I did one today and failed to take a pic. even though I thought of posting one here. I removed the pull rod, slipped in the spring and then the brake arm. Then I popped on the pedal and re-connected the pull rod. Way easier with the engine out too.
I loaded the spring by pulling it on with a hooked o ring pick and squeezing it over the arm with pliers.

So I moved the swing arm up as far as I could without taking it off. The top of the spindle arm still hit the swing arm.
I took the swing arm off and placed the spindle/spring in then used the pedal to hold it in place with the help of a strategically placed 2x4 wedge. Installed the swing arm.
All went well. Both dots lined up and rear brake works as it should.
This was an assembly issue I obviously didn't expect.
Thanks to all for walking me through it.
