Lack of Space-Abundance of Age
« on: October 30, 2022, 06:42:38 AM »
This is what I do every time I need room to really work in my small garage.  (There are still three more bikes inside, but at least I can move around freely.)  None of them get ridden nearly enough anymore. There are times where I think how great it would be to have a work space where the table saw is not a catch all for spare nuts and bolts, tools are not stored in at least three different locations, and the walls don't have one more inch of free space for another dry screw to hang an extra seat. I know the day will come where I drastically reduce or eliminate the herd entirely, I am heading into my mid 70's and each winter something seems to hurt more than it did last year. For the time being I will continue the bike shuffle routine, but I really do think that morning is getting closer where I decide my freedom of movement is more important than weaving my way through a mass of bike covers and trickle chargers.  Will I miss maintenance and trying to remember when the last one was fired, hell yes, but I also think a ratty Triumph Spitfire or Bug Eyed Sprite that needs a lot of TLC could fill that gap........

Britman, recently I have had feelings such as these. No garage is ever big enough for folks who love motorcycles . They not only are the thing that keeps us grounded in life and it's realities but they are also the anchor that keeps us on the end of a short line, sometimes making us dependent upon the security and pride we take in our ability to understand and enjoy these strays that we nurse back to health. Some of us feel that these machines are like our own children and we get overly protective about them.
My thought a few years ago was that these machines of mine (my children) just needed more space than my 24'x36'garage could provide, and if I could give them more space that would most certainly provide them and I with an environment conducive for such a "family", and any issues related to this "family" of machines would  simply disappear.  So after following such thought, I have the 24'x 36 garage, 1/2 of the 1st floor of my barn  and a 40 x110' commercial space all loaded with rebuilt machines and most of the parts to build a few more. And only this year have I realized that it makes no difference, there will never be enough space. Don't get me wrong these spaces are sacred to me and my favorite place in the world to be, but I wonder how much of life am I really missing by having this short line anchor"family"and does it really make any difference. Don't know that yet.  But I must tell you , I have owned many machines including a bug eyed sprite project, and a bug eyed sprite could never fill the void that would be left once the motorcycles are gone.
It is all so perplexing really, and I would be interested to see if you could share the answer to all of this with us, if you find it.

Well I'm hoping my aching back will allow me to ride into my 90s, Lord willing if I'm still around...
The last 4 years I have gotten away with a 11x10 storage room that a friend allowed me to build in his rental barn garages, at $30/month it was affordable space to store my 750 and stuff while I rode off to winter in San Diego.  This spring I was offered 6 carcasses that were rebuildable from another friend but where was I going to keep them to rebuild them....... Hmmm, maybe get a Shelter Logic tent garage, and after finding out that the replacement tents were only lasting a couple years that idea was canned. Then I talked to my friend about renting the space in front of the room and we decided that I would build a wall to enclose the 26 feet more, so now I have 11x36 feet of garage and yup it's filling up fast. Too fast. Now I'm trying to find a pellet stove to heat the place so I can work on them this winter here in NH...... the leash is getting shorter.....

We all have the same issues and thoughts. I have CLEARLY marked three (maybe four) bikes that are not getting used. They are getting sold in the next 6-8 months. No “fire sale”, but I want some elbow room and the funds (justified) to spend if I spot a project I want to grab. The Benelli SEI is on EBay right now, if anyone wants to assist! Want a 110 year old motorcycle for your man cave? Call me.

Me, too. Except: each time I have emptied the garage to start working on something important (like resto-ing one of the stored-out-back 750s to sell for funds to remodel the kitchen) someone brings in another bike, or [multiple] engines, and I have to fight for space for my own steed to stay inside!

A month ago I had just mine, and the 550 I am using for the book, inside. Now there's another 750 and 4 engines in there...and the 750-to-be-rebuilt is STILL in the shed! Dang...

When I read the title, I thought it would be a story about me. L0L.  I value every square foot of empty floor space. But not as much as a sweet cb750.
