Reversed front blinker.... sometimes (Solved)
« on: October 30, 2022, 12:37:45 PM »
I have a 74 CB550 with the headlight on/off switch.
My blinkers work as they are supposed to.... Until I turn on the headlights. Once I switch my headlights on with the handlebar switch, the wrong front blinker activates when I hit the switch. So they flip flop on the front... Weirdly, the correct rear blinker activates with the headlight on and off.

I have poured over the wiring diagram but the blinker part is not super clear to me. I pulled the wiring apart in the headlight and the wires are all connected as they are supposed to be. I am normally not confused over wiring but this has me stumped. I know, I should just disconnect the front blinkers. Anyone ever run into this?

Do you have the ground lugs inside the headlight bucket for the turn signals? If not, use a test jumper ground to the stems to see if it is a poor ground situation.

Finally figured this out after pouring over the wiring diagram. I had a black wire with an small orange piece of plastic around the wire by the terminal in the headlight coming off both turn signals. They were connected to the wrong sides in the wiring bundle in the headlight. I'm not exactly sure why the correct sides lit up with the headlight switch turned off, but it works as it is supposed to now!

Could you expand on this, I’m having the exact same problem. All my wiring looks correct.

Each turn signal has a running light in it, one side gets black with a blue marker and the other side gets black with an orange marker, the other filament gets fed from an orange or blue wire depending on which side it's on.

Not quite Don, the indicator heads have 2 wires, orange/white stripeand black with orange sleeve(or solid orange). Other side is blue/white stripe and black with blue sleeve(or solid blue). Ground is through the casing, stem nut inside shell and wire on nut

I understand the wiring, my issue ended up being broken wires touching each other in the harness.
