How do you file your ring end gaps?
« on: February 14, 2023, 11:19:47 AM »
Working on a CB750K8 with the CI .5mm over standard piston set.

My first measurement with top ring is about .003", I need at least .008".  I'm measuring from bottom of the bore about 1 inch into the bore.

How do you file these by hand?  Will this work?

Very fine grade file in a vise. Grip ring  with its gap over file so both ends will be grinded when squeezing it over file.

Move so file will grind from outside of ring to inside. You'll feel which way the file need to sit in vise.

If burrs will crack, it is on inside and no problem.

Worse if filing from in to out which is a no no.

I use a needle file from a set I have in different shapes. The flat one.

Make sure to grind the corners of ring ends to remove burrs sticking out.
I use a grit 400 paper.

Outside will scratch bore, inside might make ring harder to compress completely shut when mounting the cylinder.

Even good JE pistons with new Wiseco rings had sharp burrs sticking out. Easy to feel with finger over ring to end, nail hook into stickouts.

Some oil rails can cause problems if they want to hook into the expander and not fully compress. Filing the inner corner of the thin rails will avoid to hook into expander.

Maybe mostly Wiseco XA rings with very thin rails. (The 2 rings placed outside the expander making an oil control ring).

Check gap in bore in time before filing too much.

Press ring down the bore with help of piston so ring will sit correct and easier to measure with feeler gauge.

PeWe,

Do you think the XA ring are a source of oil consumption.

I always ran standard tension on high winding endurance SBC.

The low tension weren’t able to control the oil..

Good description up ther.

Used a fine whet stone to finish them up too.

XA rings and oil consumption no ideas yet.
I had heads that consumed oil.

1. Totally worn bronze guides for 5mm studs.
2. Not long after another head where guides were not enough sunken for 125-75 cam. This head does not cause oil issues now.
But cylinder used 2022 has pistons with XC rings.

But the very thin XA rings feels sloppy when assembled on piston.
Those pistons will get new rings when used again.

I also use a fine stone to finish up the edges so they feel smooth.
Once I made a little steel bench for an air cut-off tool. I put on a fine grit thin cut-off wheel and used it like a tiny table saw to grind gaps. It was easy to get more gap than I needed, I could dial the speed down to whatever felt right.
