Is this aftermarket performance! Cb550 Manifold cone (pics)
« on: March 10, 2007, 03:17:03 PM »
OK, so I bought a 72 Cb500K with all kinds of aftermarket parts! I'm junking the frame and pulling all the parts off it. it's really ugly and the motor is frozen.

So, I get to removing the manifolds and I find these things! The bike came with a Kerker exhaust and velocity stacks.. I'm thinking it may have a performance cam in it. If you have an old Honda Clymers manual, it has all the performance parts listed in the back of the book! S&W shocks, exhaust, rearsets, dual disc, race covers, aftermarket coils, oil cooler, finned tappets and gauges everywhere! Please look at the pics I added!

Is this the aftermarket turbine fan accessory?  Do you think the velocity stacks let too much air in? And this was someones solution to lower the volume of air?

Was this a aftermarket product?

The scientific principle is to create a vortex - spinning air - which creates a pressure gradient with the lowest pressure in the centre. Supposedly this puts higher pressure air where the valve opening is and lower pressure in the centre where the air/fuel mixture is reputedly banging into the valve. Whether this effect helps more than their restriction hurts is the big question.

They look like flow restrictors to me.  Maybe the turbulence helps low end torque and/or economy.  But, they just have to have degrading effects on top RPM air flow.  All those sharp angles and edges surely create trubulence and restrictive drag for airflow.

the, idea of them is smart - swirling the air would help it go around turns, in say... an intake manifold in a car.
but the effect would be so little, you wouldn't even notice the difference in power or gas mileage.

putting them that clost to the intake valve wouldn't seem to help much - especially that big. Looks like a flow restriction to me (you would have to wonder why the manufacturer wouldn't do this if it were so great).

my favorite was when i pulled one out of the intake of a Turbocharged car...
lets see.... swirl the air, hit a turbine, no more swirl
