I bought some 750 parts from a pair of brothers that raced Honda stuff back in the day, they never got past the starting line bog and blamed the carburetors.

Wilbur, you were basically learning to ride that bike all over again due to the stock motor set up. You got acclimated to the low end power of the larger 836 and making adjustments will take added seat time.
What happened to the trusty Crusin Image 836??
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I bought some 750 parts from a pair of brothers that raced Honda stuff back in the day, they never got past the starting line bog and blamed the carburetors.

More limp wrist than anything! From 5K on the line the 836 would pull by ramping rpm up to 6k. The stock motor requires more clutch slippage and ramping up to 7k plus to avoid bogging since the stocker will bog before pulling the front wheel.

What happened to the trusty Crusin Image 836??

The CI 836 started making a ticking noise out the #1 intake stack. I suspect the intake valve is leaking, but I don't know what piston slap sounds like either. Swapped a 10k mile stocker in before "The Rock" and made it to the final four! I do not want to find out what the ticking noise is at 100mph...

The CI 836 is on the stand for diagnosis. May get an undercut trans, stronger rods, and higher compression 836 kit. Primary chains and primary rubbers for good measure while I'm at it.  8)

The cold weather during eliminations didn't help much if jetting wasn't correct.  On a bike with a stock engine, you would loose a good bit of power. Although some riding adjustments had to be made due to the  smaller engine, I can understand the bogging Wilbur experienced. My bike lost 2 tenths on Sunday morning. I tried to anticipate this problem because the bike was already lean but I surely didn't expect that much drop in horsepower.  My exhaust literally changed colors from the first round win on Saturday night to thehe extremely lean run on Sunday morning.  I've got to tear this engine down to freshen it up over the off season but more importantly,  I need to dyno tune it to get my AFR corrected before I think about racing it again.  I'm going to install a WEGO as well so I can monitor the AFR in real time at the track. I'll be ordering extra jets soon.

Wow Frank, that is a dramatic color change and like you said, significant loss of power. But, the only consolation is other carbureted competitors also saw similar loss of hp & torque due to the temperature conditions…

I hate the pipes turned colors. Those sidewinder are no longer manufactured by Vance and Hines. I  guess I'm stuck with a reminder about proper carburetor tuning in all weather conditions.  I knew better but didn't think it would turn out this bad. My next goal is to consider upgrading to fuel injection.

BON AMI is a powder that will not scratch glass. You can use it on your glass windshield to remove any film or gunk that will cause streaking of the wipers. Cleaning the windshield with it before applying RainX is a great way to get maximum performance from the RainX. Or just cleaning the windshield this way will give you a clean streak free view.

I’m thinking it also can be used on exhaust pipes without scratching the chrome to remove any coloring in the chrome. Pretty sure it is an oxidation layer of the chrome that you see the color develop…

Use the Original Formula version and rub gently with a wet paste of the Bon Ami… then rinse thoroughly…
It does a nice job cleaning any stains and leaves a clean consistent finish.  When using on the windshield you will of corse want to do it first, rinse thoroughly and then wash the car.
Unfortunately any clear plastic is super sensitive to scratching and I think even Bon Ami will scratch clear plastics.

So, not all is lost on the looks of the pipes Frank…they can be cleaned up and no one will be the wiser…

Thanks for the tip. I will try that over the off season.  I'm going to force myself to pull the engine off the frame the first part of 2023. It's way past due for attention.  I'm being a total hypocrite in what I constantly preach concerning taking regular care of your equipment. This time around I'll remove the stock Honda valve and install a new set of stainless steel valves with new keepers and springs. I've got to decide on an overbore at this juncture. The sleeves have been worn beyond limits for a while now but fresh rings have always kept it going. A few of the forum members at the Cup race informed me they saw a tad of blue smoke a time or two- not good.

If you can get the pipes clean inside, Eastwood makes an inside the pipe stainless paint that seems to work well to insulate the chrome. It works with an 18" plastic hose and a circular spray nozzle. Extra cost of course, I use their paint and prep spray to clean the pipes and also clean the hose the same way after painting.
Also, since David mentioned plastics, Lucas mist and shine does a good job of filling micro-scratches in Lexan face shields and windscreens.
I witnessed a crew rubbing the inside of a brand new Funnycar body's Lexan with paper towels and Windex. The more they rubbed, the worse it got. We finally asked them to please stop and took them mist and shine and microfiber towels.

Wilbur, did you tear into the 836 engine yet for a diagnosis?? I'm curious about whats causing the sounds you may be hearing. I'd like to see you get the upgrades done on that engine along with adding an airshifer,  shift light , lower handlebars and maybe a longer swingarm. Those few external, bolt on  changes alone could help you find long term consistency. A top 5 finish next season is obtainable for you.

Congratulations on your top ten finish Wilbur. You did well last season.  Take a look at the heavy hitters above you. You hung in there with them. Now look below you and you'll see more talented racers. This says you're just as good as all of them. I'm proud of your progress over the last few years. I hope you make some off season changes to the bike to make it more consistent and easier to race. A top 5 finish is just over the horizon.FYI, I finished in the 77th spot. Lol.

High praise indeed, thanks! If I had been able to make the Ohio race I very well may have been in the top 5. Seven events in 2023 will be a tall order though. Steele, AL looks interesting, right in the Hayes brothers back yard! Madison, IL might be difficult to justify, but if my workload lets up a little this year anything is possible.  8)

FYI, I finished in the 77th spot. Lol.

A direct result of your accomplishments in other racing venues!  ;)

Wilbur,
I was ask to serve on the super eliminator administration committee so I'll probably make most of the Cup races this year.  I won't be able to run as many classes due to the responsibilities of overseeing S/E but I hope to enter street ET and top sportsman at all races.

A top 5 finish is just over the horizon.

Lol.

A direct result of your accomplishments in other racing venues!  ;)
