Oil Gallery Plug Leak
« on: November 07, 2022, 03:01:21 PM »
Bike: 1978 CB550

Had major leaks by the left sprocket cover, saw that the oil pump was leaking so I replaced all of the o-rings in there and that solved the issue.

After that Still noticed a very small leak from the stator cover and when I pulled it off a small pool of oil spilled out (no bueno). Traced it to the gallery plug. Cleaned it off and replaced the o-ring and pushed it back in. Warmed up the bike and took the stator cover back off and no leak but the gallery plug I’m guessing from the oil pressure was pushed back up flush with the stator surrounding area. I pushed it back in but my question is where is that gallery plug supped to sit? All the back in? Or a few mms out where it pushed to. Didn’t want to run the bike and have oil streaming out. Thanks in advance.

Pictures show where I pushed the gallery plug in. Orange stuff is I’m guess was previous owners “fix”

It pushes out with pressure and the "pip" is held against the lug on inside of casing. DO NOT run the engine with gen casing removed you will spread oil all over the floor and that plug will dissapear into the darkest unknown corner not to be seen again until after you have purchased the only incredibly expensive discontinued part left in the world!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Just buttoned up everything and the plug started leaking almost immediately sigh. I couldn't find any torque values for the cover. Anything else I may have overlooked?

Torque is not an issue. Don't overtighten and strip the case threads.
I think all you can do is clean the hole and plug, then replace the o-ring. A PO may have put the wrong size there.

smear some honda bond in the groove and then over the oring. don't get too heavy handed with the smear.
