Installing heated grips

Hey guys

I'm looking to install some heated grips on my bike
77 550f SS

I'm not familiar with what needs to happen before I install, if anything.

The bike components are stock, except the m-unit I've installed.n

Will the bike to run as should with the extra power being pulled?

I tried running a search before I posted this question, but didn't find a previous post.

You might be better with heated gloves that run on battery power of their own. The are "on sale" all over the place right now. Even Cycle Gear has them this time of the year.

You can give it a shot, but the 550 charging system isn't very robust. I would hook up a volt meter post install and make sure your charging system can keep up with the draw.

Bikemaster -1.5 amps on low to 3 amps on high

3 amps is only 36 watts- look at replacing bulbs with LEDs and you could make a sufficient saving there

i never ride at night but run my headlight during the day,ive removed the globes from the guages frees up a little.

Small SLA/AGM battery of 5AH could easily handle this, or maybe a 12v power pack from a cordless tool could be the power source. Easier to pop it in the charger after a ride. Just make a pouch to strap it on a frame rail or the rear grab bar and make a holder that the battery pack can slide into with some brass strips or metal tabs that make your electrical connections. Fuse it for 5A and Bob’s your uncle.
Remove it from the bike for recharging.
