have a 1978 CB750K
Seat looks good but a potential buyer said it must have been recovered since it doesn't not say HONDA on back of seat.  He had a 1977 years ago and said his had HONDA on back of seat.  Was there a difference in those two years??

Not to my knowledge, here in UK all Honda seats had Honda on them

1978 seats had "Honda" on back.

USA 1978 750 k's just had a seat assembly per honda. Although the parts pic doesn't show the back, I've never seen an original bike without Honda on the back..
Some earlier hondas were offered with a "seat coat" or the complete seat assembly from Honda)  ('75 550F's for example)

There is a good chance as noted the seat was either recovered previously with an aftermarket cover that had no Honda logo, or a complete aftermarket seat was purchased from a distributor who cannot put the Honda logo on the seat back because of patent infringement. Honda is pretty aggressive in going after larger sellers who turn a blind eye to their patent.
DSS out of England sells nice complete aftermarket replacement seats that don’t have the Honda logo for that very reason.

I see non-OEM seats with the Honda logo on eBay all the time. For example, https://ebay.to/3E9E7Yi. Whether Honda cares, I haven't a clue, but some of these sellers have been on eBay for years.

Adding the Honda logo to a seat is pretty easy to do.
