1970 Honda SL350
« on: November 23, 2022, 07:30:11 PM »
Picked this up last weekend for my next project after I finish my '73 CB750. It's pretty rough and I'm sure it will present numerous problems. Downloaded a service manual and printed parts diagrams and numbers from a parts seller on line. Engine stuck, both wheels won't turn, the shocks are my old ones from my CB750 project. Had to drag it into the garage, fun stuff.

Yeah it's in pretty bad shape. My 750 wasn't that bad, but almost! 😉

A challenge will be locating OEM Honda parts  :)
I imagine you're committed to it  ;)

Yep, I've got a SL350 frame and most rolling parts. I'm not going original, just trying to get it together to get something to ride.

yep, me too......I'm in the parts gathering mode.......I think I'm almost ready for some assembly. Still fighting with myself what to do with the frame...powder coat or try spraying paint remover, and rattle can it. It's really just something I want to run around on. I'm getting ready to be retarded.....uuuuhhhh....retired here soon. so want to take it with me to the beach and places.

Could you have a place blast the frame then rather than PC it,you could rattle can it silver.

When I saw the picture of my SL350 on face book marketplace, it didn't look too bad, my first thought was to try to bring it back to original. But when I went to buy it and saw how bad it really is, I think it's gonna be a restore, but not going with OEM parts, the plan will be a full teardown, cleanup, remove paint and rust and rattle can paint (on the frame - silver and original color on tank and fenders) and get it running. I removed the paint off my '73 750 frame with wire wheel on a power drill, multiple sandings and then multiple coats of primer and then multiple coats of white satin (going for a white frame/ other parts black paint job).

I like the silver paint on the frames of those SL's;if it's rough it'll take more primer  ::)

Use POR15, it will assure no further rusting and will be lots cheaper than powder coating. It's really tough stuff too.

It really was delightful. US import, never sold in Canada. Only flaw was the exhaust had to come off to remove the LHS side cover. One of the ones I really wish I’d kept.

The text of your message says "CL185" although the sidecover emblem says CL200;I was curious if it was a Canadian model and a 185cc ? I like the CL200 and the rarity of that one-year model.  8) That's certainly a shining example of a 'gem of a Honda'.

Definitely badged CL200. They were 198c.c.’s. Not sure why I thought it was a 185…. Old age?

Rustoleum makes a Stainless Steel appliance epoxy that I used on my 250 Nighthawk basket case. It's not Cloud Silver but it's not far off.
I bought it at Ace Hardware if memory serves.

I had tried a few different PC places in the past and only one hesitantly would blast a part or two but their price for just 'blasting only' was more than I was comfortable with..

You could get or borrow a compressor, get a siphon feed gun and some media and make a plastic tent somewhere and shoot it!
Just a suggestion.

Well, I got a compressor, and a bucket of abrasion, just need some plastic to build a catch basin, and a better gun than I have.

I did, however, try it a bit. Guess I'd better invest in a hood. It did take some off, but will take quite some time.........!!!!!!!!!!

Sandblasting takes a large air compressor.
I was looking for certain companies a few years(hadn't located them..)ago which go to locations(mobile)& do commercial sandblasting(like outside or when they go to a jobsite)and I could possibly set-up something by speaking with them to agree on a certain time for me to bring my frame, etc. over toward the end of their job..
The size of the nozzles and Big compressors that they use would make 'short work' of my frame, etc. A 'Quick Blast' is all those large blasters would need to take the paint right off, then you can repaint.
Do you have any large sandblasting companies like that not far from you who do outdoor sandblasting? There are some companies that want the brick facade of their building blasted to bring back the original look of fresh material.

I imagine these commercial companies are near large cities?
I wouldn't mention motorcycle parts at first;see if you can find out what their schedule of jobs are:when and where and which places they're scheduled to blast the exteriors of buildings, etc.
I bet one of them could help work out something;you might just try showing-up at one of their jobs in-progress with the frame ready to be blasted and the smaller parts all strung together with a thick gauge wire through all of them, then offer one of the workers cash for some quick work.
That would be one way.
