I have a CB750K and the frame is 2000494 and the engine is 2000700. 206 digits apart. How close are you to a perfect match?

I like that  :)
Seems to me that plant production at Honda was very 'in synch' the day they installed your engine into the frame;they rolled a good, close number engine assembly up to your frame.  ;)

I have 14,100 and a blank engine pad. Another bike has a k1 engine and a blank frame. Both were replacement parts. Honda should have supplied dealers with number stamps.

Don,does ILL. require both Frame V.i.N. frame number And engine number to register it and put it into the system ?

No, I've never had anyone from Illinois look at my numbers except when I needed a VIN check to get a title. Even then he only looked at the frame.

I moved here to Ca. and noticed when I registered my bike and got it into the Ca. DMV system, they recorded the engine # and it's on my registration also.  :D

i sourced a used cb500 engine from Canberra, and one from Brisbane years ago, they were ten engine numbers apart,so they went down the line almost side by side and got split up and shipped to Australia miles and miles apart for years and years, then both ended up at my place.

This is an interesting subject.
With enough data you could track the deviation between frame and engine as each model year production progressed and graph it out.

My sandcast has a 400 number spread, a member here had one that was a few bikes away and it also had a similar spread. Apparently, a batch of newer engines got dropped off on the loading dock that day.

  Caution; car story,
I got a tour of a car collection that had four 426 hemi cars, the owner flew in the Mopar certification guy to confirm originality and document them. After returning with lunch the cert guy asked if he purchased two of the cars from the same person, apparently at some point the two cars had their engines swapped. They were bought in different states from different owners and yet ended up in the same collection, parked side by side.
Engines were later swapped back and cars are numbers matching again.

Tool14 - You can’t subtract the frame from the engine
1978 engines start 3000001 and the frames start at 2800001.
My engine was the 23,979th off the line and my frame was 23,971st off the line.
They met up on that faithful day (12 /77) on the assembly line!!
