carb bowl drain screw position
« on: December 08, 2022, 07:26:43 AM »
I dont know a lot about carbs, but I noticed that the drain screws on 1-3 face left and 4 faces right.
Can the bowl be turned around by accident on number 3? Will this mess up the float?
Is that maybe why my number 3 lets out gas on the overflow?

All four bowls should have the screws facing to the outside. 1 and 2 are a pair and 3 and 4 are the opposite. They can only face one way.

Someone has most likely replaced the #3 carb bowl with a #1 or #2. I don't think it will make a difference, it's just a matter of making it a little more difficult to drain that carb if need be.

Nonsense, of course it makes a difference.

Ofcourse it lets out gas and most probably not only from the overflow...
The front and rear of the floatchamber is not the same.

Depends on year and model of the bike, I suppose, which wasn't stated. I've had bikes with replaced float bowls and it made no difference.

Whoa!.... Assuming this is a SOHC cb750? Any floatbowl can be on any carb and the screw can point in the opposite direction. They can NOT be rotated 180 degrees, but are interchangeable. If not, how can he have one mounted?

The overflow leaks if the float level is too high, float valve leaking, punctured float, or tube is cracked.....

to be clear, none of the float bowls are on backwards, number three just has a bowl that faces to the left instead of the right.

Is that maybe why my number 3 lets out gas on the overflow?

I'm guessing this is the case.

Apologies, I've messed up. I read it as if it was suggested to have the drain screw on the correct side by turning the bowl 180 degrees. Sorry, for the confusion.

I have a few like that too. I usually drain them by popping the retaining clip anyway.

I think I initially was thinking this until I realized that the drain tube would be on the other side and I knew that wasn’t the case.
