cb650 Timing Chain Tensioner lower screw
« on: December 08, 2022, 03:33:57 PM »
Hey All,

Can't find any topics on this specific issue so was wondering what y'alls thoughts are. My cam chain tensioner lower screw is unthreaded, is there a way to push this back in without having to take the cylinder heads and jugs out?

Have some pictures attached.

You should be able to remove the center head cover and reach down with a large screwdriver and press it back out.

You might be able to do something like get a strong magnet on the end of the bolt and pull it back through. Or superglue, but very carefully.

If you can't somehow coerce it out that way, you will probably have to at least get the cylinder head cover off in order to access the tensioner. Last time I had my 650 apart, I don't recall there being enough access with just center valve cover off.

But unless something is really wrong, I'm unsure how it worked its way inside like that. The few ways I can think of this happening are: broken bolt, improperly installed tensioner during rebuild, or broken / jammed tensioner.

For future reference, I was able to get the screw out by using a neodymium magnet. I took off the carbs, stuck a 30 pound magnet on (thank god the block is aluminum) and pulled it out with the nut attached to the magnet, screw it in enough to get it on the thread, and tightened it with the 10MM from there.
