Gas cap latch installation
« on: December 07, 2022, 07:25:01 PM »
I am having trouble getting the latch spring compressed so that I can push the pivot through it and the mounting hole. Any successful ideas appreciated. Just finished painting the tank and don't want to scratch the new finish. Thanks -  Tom

I usually wait until the new paint is well cured, then lay some cardboard (like the kind from the back of a pad of paper) around the filler neck so I can stuff that dang thing back together again. Then I can just tear away the cardboard afterward, because I just cut a little form-fit hole for that bracket and lay the cardboard over it.

I only wish I had done that after the FIRST time I painted a tank...

Good idea! Definitely don't want to scratch the paint!

Just finished painting the tank and don't want to scratch the new finish.

I've used painters tape around the opening to prevent any accidents to the paint.

Yes the cardboard is a good idea.
But I was hoping that someone had thought up a good way to compress that little spring and make the install easier.

I remember it being a challenge but not a good tip on how to do it. It seems like I held the spring in place and pushed the pin and latch into it. Do it in a clean area so when the spring goes into orbit you can find it again.

My shop seems to have a few Black Holes where things go never to be seen again.

Go to a dry cleaner and get a clear plastic garment bag. Put the tank in the bag, reach in the bag and preform the magic to avoid the Black Hole......

Now, what happened to my local dry cleaner...?
