I can't help you with that answer.  Hopefully you'll get a lot of good feedback because I'm curious myself for both no bar and wheelie bar with slick combinations.

I've been curious about my drag bikes. One PO passed away and his multiple ex-wives had already disposed of his photos and momentos. The other guy isn't remembering a lot, I noticed letting him talk was better than asking things. Three bikes, not one time slip or photo.
The big 4 express had run within .02 of his NHRA class record, he said he was asked if he was willing to do a teardown if he got a record. Still don't know the class, date or ET.

Not a racer but 836 was my first time going down the strip. I rode my street bike out to the track and made some 12.4 laps on my RC 836 "30-30" kit bike. You can find that kit in the early catalogs, and it was affordable on my Navy E-3 salary - if you were careful and I was motivated. I had that little RC 240 cam, RC header, and a 16" rear wheel so I could touch the ground. Got 50+mpg, would pull wheelies, and most importantly, would out stop-light your big block anything...

Wilbur is the most recent racer on this forum to run an 836 but he had flat top cruzin images pistons under a k8 head. I'm not certain if Bill had an 836 or 900(+) cc engine in Cobra girl when he first started racing again.  He made solid low 11 second passes if I recall correctly.

Simple specs:
>78' CB750K motor w/stronger valve springs and retainers
>Flat top 65mm C.I. pistons
>CycleX CX-1 cam
>16/52 sprockets
>79' swingarm (+1-1/2")
>Dyna S ignition w/Dyna 3ohm coils
>MAC 4into1 exhaust
>K8 PD carbs w/stock jetting and two washers under needle

I figure the flat top pistons probably keep the compression ratio near stock with the larger cc combustion chamber of the K8 head. My best pass was 12.9 at around 101mph

Tis true frank, yes i am,not sure which way im going with it.i can sink a ton of money into my spare 750 motor and maybe run 11's or take my 929 motor and run 10"s but, here's the conundrum.the 750 has class and soul and is a cool project.the 929 is a souless clump of metal.oh well, decisions, decisions.

Just come on and follow us down the rabbit hole. Going fast is overrated when turning on a win light is the primary goal. Build a mild 836 and join in on the fun.

Bill is the anointed one. We can come together at his trailer. 😁

By the way, if you've absorbed anything that I've ever posted regarding building an SOHC for drag racing purposes,  you've probably noticed that I place more emphasis on the chassis setup and less on a high performance engine build. You can  throw a lot of money  at putting together  a high horsepower engine and then put it into a poorly prepped chassis and get disappointing results versus concentrating on a bike thats specifically  designed to launch hard and be easier to control by the rider.  Spend time on the rolling stock first. You won't regret it in the end.

On the Facebook "Honda Dragbikes" page Dale Walker posted pics of his Honda dragbikes and when I asked, he updated the pics with ET's.
I posted a link, maybe he will stop by.
