You are right, once a roof starts leaking, any building's time is limited if allowed to continue.  I remember when the sheet metal blew off that one years ago.  I think the only think keeping that barn together is it is relatively dry around here.  And yes, there are plenty of places to go cow trailing.  I wanted to get a little elevation for photos, so went up Kuna Butte.  It was a little muddy in spots, for sure.

Beautiful pics Greg, get that calendar together and I’ll buy one, I’m sick of looking at cat pictures! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well, you have me thinking about it.  I wonder how much two calendars would cost? :D

I reckon you could sell a lot more than two mate, I think from memory the BOTM calendars sold pretty well, so a bike themed calendar with some of that magnificent scenery would certainly loosen a few purse strings. ;D

Ride #6, 95 miles.

Another nice day with a high of 68F.  When I was riding this past Sunday, I saw a sign for a park that I had never seen before.  I looked it up and it's just a small county park, only 25 acres.  It looked like a nice area and it's on the Guadalupe River.  The place I had tacos at on Sunday was on the same river, but about 25 miles upstream.  Before I took off on the bike today, I looked for some places to eat around that area and found a place called the Waring General Store in Waring, Texas.  I had never been there, and they had some good reviews for food.  The web said it would be open.  Perfect.

On the way down I discovered a really cool, old, abandoned railroad bridge.  Both ends were on private property, and it was all gated up, so I could get real close.  The park was cool.  Nice view of the river up close.  Took a short hike.  I headed to Waring and pulled up the General Store with its cool old gas pumps.  I walked up to the front door and it was looked.  I peeked inside the window, and it looked vacant and permanently closed.  So much for that.  So...back on the bike again, I headed to Luckenbach.  I knew they had a food trailer there, but I've been there a bunch of times when it wasn't open.  Turns out it was open.  I got a BBQ pulled pork sandwich.  It was tasty, but I need to quit eating so much white bread.  After that it was time to head home.

If ya'll like pics of old barns, they got a million of them around here. A lot of them are made with stone walls.  Probably built by the original German settlers.  I'll stop for pics.

Beautiful pics Bud, and that sandwich looks magnificent. I’m torn between doing a pie ride or a chicken run this weekend, now I’ve found an excellent charcoal chicken shop locally that delivers I no longer have the conundrum of wasting 75% of my uneaten lunch (I made a delicious sandwich yesterday with the leftovers from my home delivered chicken from Wednesday) I think I’ll ride another 20 miles up the road and buy a pie. ;D

Bud, are they still selling gas out of those old pumps? Great pics. You might need to work on your eatery picking skills though, seems like your first choice is always closed.

I had to double check.  When I pulled up to those pumps I figured they were just for looks, but then I noticed they still had hoses.  Most of the time when I see old pumps on display like this they don’t have hoses.  I’m asking myself the same question…do these work?  I’m wondering if I leave my bike parked there and go in to eat will someone ask me to move my bike because they need to fill up.  So I’m checking the pumps out closer and I see the old mechanical price per gallon dial, or reel (whatever it’s called) and it can only go up to 99 cents.  That’s when I knew for sure they didn’t work.  Ahhh!

Upon closer inspection I could also see through a hole in the side of one of the pumps that there was nothing inside of it except for a couple of wires hanging down.  The pumps were also held to the concrete with small cheap hardware store right angle brackets.  I could have probably pushed them over if I tried.

Yeah, it’s strange around here.  Some stuff is seasonal and closed for the winter months.  Lots of places are only open two or three days a week.  Lots of places close early, because it’s a bunch of small towns and people don’t go out in the evenings much…probably because they don’t want to hit deer and hogs on the highways.

Seems to be a high rate of failure with restaurants and bars too.  People move out here and want to start a business and don’t make it.  I’m sure lots of places shut down during the CV.  Someone will come along and reopen them.

The other thing is the internet is often wrong!  Says places are open and they’re not…

Google maps suck too, I had to drive over to my son’s new place for the first time on Wednesday and had looked at the map first, but at the first intersection it told me to turn left instead of right, so assuming it had found a faster route turned left, only to be told to do a U turn.

Okay, did that, then went on the weirdest roundabout route that eventually only took me back on to the main road that I’d started on! Still I got there eventually and the return route was fine, but it did give me pause for thought. ;D

It was Google maps that told me that place was open.  I still use it for navigation.  I tried some motorcycle nav apps and haven’t found one I like.  Too much fluff and their maps have been really bad.

Sometimes I’ll change my mind and take a different route.  That screws up the nav apps, big time.  Google maps is generally pretty good at keeping up, unless I have a lot of waypoints entered, otherwise it’s trying to get me to turn around and ride through that waypoint.  But they’re pretty easy to delete mid route and carry on.  I wish I could enter more than ten waypoints  in Google maps though.  Sometimes I’ll have to get to where I want to go and then enter new directions for my way back home.  No biggie.

I was doing a job in Huntington Beach and the Google Street view camera car was going by, I  flipped the bird at them. About 2 months later one of the roofers on another job ask me if I had worked at that address. I told him I did, so he pulled up the address and sure enough there I was giving the one finger salute as clear as day! It cracked me up.

The Sporty was the closest to the door, and as I've just changed the oil and filter, decided that my "Hooligan bike" would do. It's been my most reliable bike now for over 7 years, and of course it didn't let me down, one press of the starter button and it was idling happily. I rode off again, and rode it like I stole it all the way to Kilmore.

I never thought I’d be reading that, not that I’m qualified to have an opinion on HD or any other bike.

It’s nice to hear that you all are enjoying your rides. Nice photos and good meals.
Im still about 6 weeks away unless global warming intervenes.

Beautiful day here for February in Ohio.  It warmed up to 50 °F this afternoon and I got ride #4 in the books.

Rode out to check on Mom's place while she is in the sunny south for the winter and then just meandered around on the back roads for an hour or so.  The 550's just about ready for spring as it's running great.  Did a complete carb clean and rebuild and reinstalled the factory air box in place of the pods installed back in the 80's.

Might do the clutch as I very happy with the way the clutch turned out in the Turbo.....  The jury is still out for now.

Well done Spotty, good to see you here in the 2023 thread. Make sure you post a pic of the VMax, I'm sure the guys here will get a kick out of it.

Yesterday I felt the need, the need for self flagellation. What better way to lower your self esteem than ride a 12 BHP (on a good day) single cylinder Indian made vague copy of a long dead British bike that was never that good anyway, flat out on a public road, barely reaching the speed limit downhill, let alone up, and it's very hilly around where I like to ride. I filled it up and even though it wasn't full when Rob dropped it off, and considering that I'd done 80-odd miles the previous weekend, it only took 10 litres. That's a good thing, the lowest octane fuel I could buy was $2.07 per litre yesterday, about $1.45 USD, or $5.36 USD per US gallon. The up side of all of the above is that this thing is good for around 80 MPG, so at least you can pretend there's something good about RE 350's.

The stupid thing is that I really like it. On Saturday afternoon after my misadventures with the blue F2 I gazed upon the little beast and decided that I was going to take it for a ride, but first I wanted to change the handlebars for something less ridiculous, so ratted thru my collection and found another set of Ebay cheapies, and some fat brown Beston grips that I'd been saving for a rainy day. It didn't make a huge difference to the ergonomics, (the seat is way too close to the handlebars) but at least my hands weren't continually trying to slide off the grips at warp speed. I tried to stick to roads with a 50 MPH top speed, but at one stage got caught for a few miles on 60 MPH roads which wasn't too bad until I hit a hill, and dropped back to 50, and changing down only makes the bike louder, but all in all, it was still fun. As soon as I could I hit some lonely dirt roads, and had even more fun bouncing around the rutted roads, using all of the (rather plush) suspension. I still had to get off to take couple of  pics, of course.

RE Sunday 12 February 2023 3 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I had some leftover chicken from Saturday night's home delivery, so didn't need to stop for food anywhere. I headed back on a route where I knew there were road works, which I usually try to avoid, but on this bike, any speed restriction, is a good thing. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun bike, but is really better suited to commuting on crowded city streets (where it's spent much of it's life) than on country roads. I was telling Rob today that if I bought a RE (I have thought about it...) I'd buy a 500 and he couldn't really understand, but I've ridden a later EFI 500 and it was a lot happier at 60 MPH than the 350. Sadly the 350 has a shorter stroke as well as a smaller bore, so (and this broke Rob's heart when I told him) you can't turn a 350 into a 500, well, not easily, anyway. I got home, ate my chicken sandwich, and joined the cats in a well earned snooze. ;D

It was a balmy 55 °F  yesterday and I got ride #5 done.  Just about 70 miles of rambling and a curvy ride through a state park.  Still dreaming of warmer weather.

I'm really starting to like this Yamaha.  Smooth as silk, 4K @ 55mph, and 5K @ 70mph.  Gas mileage it's too bad either and will probably improve with warmer weather.

Looking good Dennis, I’m guessing that it’s geared pretty low so that the turbo is never far away when you need some boost? My twin turbo Subaru is the same, 4000 RPM @60 MPH, with the secondary turbo coming on at 4500. ;D

Thanks Terry.  The boost starts coming on right around 5000 rpm.  Under 5000 rpm it runs pretty much like any strong 650, it has very good acceleration, nice crisp throttle response and no flat spots or hesitation.   From 5500 rpm to 9500 rpm the rush of power lets you know it's not a normal 650.  It's just perfect for passing on a two lane, drop a gear and the boost comes up and whoosh you go from 55 to 85 just like that.  It's very enjoyable to ride.

Does the turbo unit function as it should? sometimes they have problems.

It gives me every indication that the turbo is working correctly.  While it's not fast like a modern sport bike, when it's on the boost, it feels like it accelerates much like my 79 CBX.
