  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Happy New Year! Folks, as discussed in the 2021 and 2022 threads, this thread is not just to remember Frank, but also to share his New Years Resolution to get off our butts and ride more. A lot of us are getting older and we're carrying a few aches and pains, and sometimes it's easier to talk about riding than actually doing it, so it's important to get out there and get some miles under our tyres.

It's good for our bikes too, bikes that aren't ridden often tend to slowly self destruct, I'm currently in the process of revitalising my RC51  because after ignoring it for the last few years I have a rusty tank, an unserviceable fuel pump, and a clutch master cylinder that needs a new seal kit. (plus rock hard tyres, leaky brakes, etc etc, But I digress....) Riding your bike, as opposed to parking it under a dust sheet and just bullsh1tting everyone about it, is actually good for it!

The rules were changed in 2022 to be a bit more inclusive. 1. To post in this thread, the ride you're posting must be a minimum of 50 miles. 50 miles isn't hard, we can all get out and do that, and it'll give our oil a chance to get warm, recharge our batteries (both the bikes, and ours) and burn off any condensation inside our engines and pipes. 2. This thread is no longer restricted to just SOHC4's. A lot of us have bikes other than SOHC4's that we like to ride, and take pics of, so it'll be good to be able to post here, and I for one will enjoy looking at pics of other bikes that you own, out on the road. 3. You can only claim one ride in one day, regardless of how many miles you do. (the more the better)

Apart from the above, this thread is all about getting off our comfy chairs and onto our bikes, and enjoying some two wheeled exploring. We have a "clique" of riders here who really try hard to do their rides every year, and I hope that even more members here, from as many places around the globe, will participate and post pics of your bikes, your scenery, your riding buddies, what you're eating and drinking (in moderation, of course) and how you're enjoying your favourite hobby. Remember, 50 miles is the minimum, no speedo readings are necessary, we're all adults, and of course if you want to ride more than 50, well that's even better.

I stole this pic from Frank's memorial thread, it shows Frank doing what he was promising himself that he'd try do more of when he started this thread in 2020, getting out as often as he could and enjoying riding his bike. Let's all continue to get out there as often as we can in 2023, and just enjoy the ride!

Just wait 4 months for my first ride. 4 1/2 if spring will become as last one 2022.

Count me in as well!  Old age is creeping up on me and I kind of let last year get away.  Planning to spend much more time on the road this year and in the years to come.

Only 50?   Where is the challenge?  I clock 50 miles just running errands in town thats 10 miles away.

That threshold allows you to get out but not spend 1/2 a day on the bike. 100 miles often is going to be more than 3 hours of riding for my area. Local speed limits and traffic.
Running errands and using the bike as transport is my primary source of rides. 70-75 miles is typical of many of my rides but I haven't been logging them here. If I just take.a ride to go get a meal and back home a ride can be as little as 30-35 miles.

I am often limited on my saddle time as the doctors won't prescribe pain meds for me anymore and dui from being on a narcotic pain med and riding isn't something I risk. Most docs are super hesitant to even prescribe heavy pain meds anymore. So, I have to balance my time on the bike With my health and too much saddle time some days puts me in pain for days afterwards. Spinal issues suck.
So, I was one of the voices petitioning for a lower mileage threshold.

If you can do a long 100 miler or more, more power to you, do it...

More people can participate.

Even those with joint issues or bad seat, shocks. I think we are many with joint pain. Check the age, 60+ guys.

A nice lunch ride;) I have done several when working (riding)  from home. +1.5 hours to the normal lunch ;)
I have exact 80km (50miles) totally to a favourite kebab restaurant in the countryside.

I did over 10.000km on my K6 2022, mostly 200-230km/ 125-140 miles rides.
That take some time and fuel that cost much more and can be a high cost for one ride.

Most of them not documented here when they were the same route and same food ;) ;D

50miles/80km is a convenient distance for everyone. A good choice as I see it.
There are many that are not blessed with a comfortable CB ;)

EDIT:
A shorter ride as 50miles can focus on a few longer stops with nice views to be documented with phone or camera. Show us other guys worldwide. ;)
So the relatively short ride can be a long one.

Really appricated before mid April ;D

I was just surprised guys, no disrespect was intended.

And 100 miles with a sidecar is something you would have to experience to understand the demands of it.

Also I did not have a clue that 50 miles was the number in 2022, knowing that I would be done in August.  Unless I run to a store on my lunch break (I am 100% home office) I never just go to a store and back. If I trouble myself to gear up I usually ride 30 - 60 miles just for the pleasure of riding.  Thats why I have hard time taking pictures, i prefer the time in the saddle to anything else.

Ok, off my soap box.  Sorry, still tipsy from yesterday and it makes me talk too much.  :D

No problems and no offence at all ;)
This is a forum where we bikers write about what we like and feel about things. Discussions, "positive" and "negative"  make this forum even better.

I have followed the earlier discussions when Frank opened his thread and Terry's  thoughts to include more bikes and riders.
100miles can sometimes for somebody be too much in different aspects such as pain, time and money ;)

I hope to be able to ride at least 15 years more, min 10!
There is no maximum ride lenght specified ;D

Terry, thanks for carrying the ball here.

This thread dovetails with my usual rides, once a week or so during the season April-October +/-. The further I go from this suburban madness, the better and safer the riding is. The challenge is to get beyond the traffic signals, the neon signs, the Walmarts to the 2 lane country roads. Getting there and enjoying it will get me to 100, I might have had one or two under that. I will keep at it as long as I can, I will be 70 next time, and 100 miles puts me in the easy chair for a snooze, after the adrenaline from riding wears off. A new, nimble, comfortable cycle might extend my riding days, but for now the CB will do just fine.

No worries guys, nothing's changed from last year, 50 miles is the minimum, so ride as far as you like. My fitness has improved a tad in the last year or so, so most of my rides were over 100 miles, but a couple of times I had to turn back due to crap weather so it was good that I could still do the minimum and post on the thread.

I've been trying to decide how many miles I'd done last year and was surprised that like Per, I've done around 5000-6000 miles. That trip down from Hervey Bay (1360 miles) certainly helped, but the 30-odd trips to the Heathcote bakery (130 miles each) and the recent 103 milers to Broadford, the two day trip to Bairnsdale (400 miles) etc, have all helped. I'm not sure if I'll be able to repeat that in 2023, but who knows what's around the next bend? Hopefully I'll at least get my 23 rides in.

It's another stinker today (90 deg F plus) and tomorrow when it cools down I'm driving my little truck down to visit my 94 year old mum to give her a Christmas gift and drop off a couple of mopeds to my cuz, so my next ride won't be until at least Thursday. Hopefully someone here will get a ride in soon, to kick this thread off, preferably with pics. ;D

Well after having 0 qualifying rides in 2022, let me start us off this year!  Was a cloudy and wet 55° degrees today, but I run some Ohio backroads for a total of 68 miles.  Sorry no photos, thought about getting a shot at the State park, but my fingers were pretty cold and didn't stop to get off for a photo.

Completely re did the front brakes on the turbo and while not up to today's standards, they are doing great for a 40 year old bike.  The master cylinder was really gunked up with lots of brake fluid crystals, the calipers not too bad.  Just used organic pads.  Hoping today's ride was enough to get the brakes all squared away.

Ok guys, it's officially on. Whoda thunk it would be by someone in Ohio in early January.  Kinda sets it up for no excuses,  I'm going to have to get the FJR back on the road now!

Good job B-A, thanks for breaking the ice!

We've been having stupidly mild weather here in Northeast Massachusetts, I think we dodged about 12 feet of snow in December and saw some record flooding instead. I've been thinking about keeping an eye on the long term forecast to call in sick & ride.

What's everyone been using for cameras? I find it clumsy stopping for a pic and fiddling with my gloves and tank bag to get out my phone (bane of my existence that it is) there has to be a better way.

My takeaways from this thread at this point consist of these few things, they're a good beginning for me:

Get out of the comfy chair
Find time for 50 miles
Increase fitness levels
Manage pain

G'Day Alan, I just use my iphone, yes I have to take my glove off and pull it out of my pocket, but hey, if that's too hard for you, you've been sitting in your comfy chair for way too long!

Well done BA, you're first cab off the ranks! It'd be nice if we knew each other's first names, but if you're some James Bond type who needs to keep his identity secret, fair enough! ;D

Someone nicked him from his ID as BA instead of addressing him as Dennis or taking the time to spell out BallAquatics...

Dennis is probably a badass though...

It's true I have been sitting too long. My current pair of riding gloves are a hassle to get into and out of as well. I should probably find a better fitting pair and hand these down to someone else.

I am considering some sort of handlebar mounted camera but I'm not going to budget much for it. I guess some research is due.

Action cameras can give you riding video. Since we typically ride in nice weather you could even use a DashCam for a car if it had a mount you could adapt to the handlebars... A few states in the US it is illegal to use a windshield suction mount for gps or anything else...

Todays smartphones are perfect for photos whenever you need.
My phone is now rather old, released spring 2019.
Oneplus 7 Pro. It has wideangle lens too.
Their earlier 6T had no wideangle, but still a very good phone and camera.

Iphones and Samsungs with similar spec cost much more than Oneplus. Their 10 Pro is their later with better cameras.
Latest and cheaper 10T more focus on processor speed and charging, less on cameras.
My 7Pro is still working too good for an upgrade.
EDIT:

I have also the Tapatalk app making access to this site very simple.
Creating threads, posts and adding photos is really simple too. I paid for adding more photos at the same time. Did not cost much for limitless access period

They also make gizzies ( fancy word for thingamabob ) you can put on the finger tips of your gloves that work like a stylus.  No need to remove your gloves to operate the touch screen. I have my phone set up with a speech command so there is no need to press the shutter button.

Be aware that many phones have been damaged in handlebar mounts because of vibration destroying the focusing and zoom mechanisms for the lenses. Very expensive to have this happen as phone makers deny any warranty for this failure.
Just a word of caution…

Well done BA, you're first cab off the ranks! It'd be nice if we knew each other's first names, but if you're some James Bond type who needs to keep his identity secret, fair enough! ;D

Hello Terry, the names Dennis.  The James Bond thing made me laugh.  Not James Bond, but maybe just a country boy who likes to fly under the radar,  Lol

Might just be able to sneak another ride in tomorrow before temps drop back to normal for this time of year.  Forecast is calling for partly cloudy with temps up around 57 °F.  A bit of sun shine would make for a very nice ride.

You will regret the bikes you DIDN'T buy much more than the ones you DID!!!  It's never too late to start a new adventure!

Dennis, is Ball Aquatics a reference to Ball State in Muncie?

I just now saw our weather forecast. It a wet and gray 40ish here, across the border 60’s in Ohio. The warm front just won’t get here.

Short shins - nice photos, that looks a terrific piece of road cut into the mountainside, but also busy. Can you make your own pace or must you fall in behind slow vehicles?
