US VIN check
« on: January 04, 2023, 02:08:05 AM »
hi,
Referring to  a US CB550K0, is there a US website or other publicly available way of checking the history of a US bike using the VIN and/or engine numbers only?
Thanks

Welcome aboard the forum. Where are you located? Woodall Spa is where?
Did you already get the 550?

There are web sights that say they offer it but I haven't tried them.

Howdy, welcome.  :)

Short answer to your question is no.
Do you have a copy of the Honda Shop Manual or Parts List for your bike? Get one here:

not much help here...but..
Before 1981, Honda's engine #'s and frame #'s ( not really a v.i.n. #) were just a range of numbers that showed what model a bike was. Beginning in 1974 for the U.S., they specified what Model year the bike was.
Apparently, beginning in 1981, Honda used a true V.I.N. # that would help in identifying more info....which may make those bikes more researchable....

But: in the U.S. . Each individual state has a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) where vehicles are registered and titled. Each DMV has their own way of operating...
In my state of Pennsylvania, the DMV only keeps records of ownership exchanges for 10 years. So that's as far back as it goes. Also, the title no longer shows all previous owners.....growing up in Louisiana, car titles showed all owners from day 1......
So, your title, depending on the state, might show a complete history. Or, contacting that state might give results.
Hope the sites mentioned before can help. If they do, I'd like to know because I'd like to find the origin of my bike....

see short answer....

Many thanks for the replies.

Woodhall Spa is a small village in Lincolnshire, UK.
Yes I have the bike already. It was imported into UK pre-2013 (no paperwork) and as far as I can tell never registered as you cannot do that without import paperwork.

Just trying to gather as much information as possible before I go through a secondary process to register it.

If I find a website that can search the DMV of all the states I will post here.

Most of those services are computer based and require a modern VIN with 13 or 17 or whatever number of digits modern VIN's have.

in that case......you can only go by the frame and engine #'s....which will only tell you if that engine and frame are correct for that model......

Both frame and engine number are correct for the model.

Appreciate the information and the photograph from the Honda guide.
