Old cb750 Tank.

Stripped the chrome, cap and badges off the s/c tank today and took it to a paintless dent remover that has an excellent reputation. It has a few dents, but no cracks in the paint. If he can “save” it, I want to polish it up and leave truly original. Fingers crossed!

It’s date stamped May, 1969.

I hope it works out for you. Would be really nice to keep an original. I took a CB750K tank in to a paintless dent repair guy and was told these Honda tanks are so thick he couldn't do it. Maybe he didn't want to mess with it too.

I’ve had that response in  the past too. This fellow seemed more interested in giving it a try.

Thanks! Hopefully get it smoothed out and polished up decently. I do not want to paint it. I have a matching set of side covers and the headlight bucket and fork ears are “presentable”.......

The tank in photo #2 is a later tank (prepping it for my K1).

I'm lost or dense tonight. How is the date deciphered from that " 4 5 1" stamp ? And where is it located on the tank ?

Not at all! This stamp is only on the very early tanks and the explanation is a bit convoluted. I’ll dig out my notes so I get it right!

The “4” means 44 years after the death of the last Emperor (4 + 40 = 44).  1925 + 44. = 1969.
5.1 means May 1.

 Thanks John.  1 9 6 9 sure sounds easier !!  :D   Did that tank also come with the special size petcock that was only used on the real early stuff. Think it was shorter in overall length ??

Yes.... I got it apart yesterday, should be able to use it. The lever face plate is held on with screws, not rivets. Looks like a stock cb450 unit?
