1970 or 71?
« on: January 15, 2023, 04:46:23 PM »
I’m considering a 750 that has me puzzled. It has a build date of 08/70 on the vin tag. The bike is advertised and registered as a1970. However, it has 1971 brake calipers, gas tank and emblems, side covers and emblems. The speedo and tach are 70. The front fender is single cut, 70. The seat latch is 70. The rear fender/taillight is 1972!!! I believe the seller is basing his asking price on it being an original 1970. Can someone please shed some light on what this bike is? Much thanks in advance!!

8/70 is an early K1, known to have some K0 parts.
The K2 taillight may have been put on at some point in time.
Check the vin numbers.

It was probably sold in 1970 and titled a 1970 as was happening through 1975 years. (1976 models came marked on vin plate as 1976 model.)

I’ve seen this mix once before.... check the instruments. Plastic cowl and lenses; K0. Metal/ Glass; K1.
The reality is there were “transition” bikes and often the owners would do up grades to “modernize” their bikes! The VIN number will tell the tale.

Parts swapping is the best/worst part of cb750's. Honda was more concerned with building as many as we would buy than which parts or numbers went on a particular bike.

It sounds like a late transition model and someone added a late model fender...I guess at this point for me I would want to ensure the gauges, frame and motor are all original to one another and the wrong body work is in good condition so it can be swapped out or sold to get correct stuff.

K1 production started in July 1970, K1 use HM300 exhaust and early seat latch.
A few bikes made in January 1970 had cut fenders, K1 have lip fenders, your fender was replaced.

it's not a '70...or a '69 model..or a '71....it's either a KO, or a K1....year registrations could be all over the place....
a build date of 8/70 and a honda release date of 9/21/70 makes it a K1....which was sold from 1970-1971...
according to Honda....
It helps to look at it from a model standpoint....not year....
frame/engine #'s tell the tale....

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1787064561658693/?mibextid=6ojiHh Well I tried to post a link to the ad. I can’t get the numbers until I go look at it again. I’m sure from all the info shared that it’s a transition bike with a changed rear fender. Thanks everyone for the info.

It looks like 90% K1 (1971) except for the fenders front and rear. Front fender bottom almost  looks hack sawed as its  too straight across. Rear shocks are non stock. Pretty much full retail on the price for the right person.

The front fender bottom is bent in and up. The mileage 43,000 bothers me also with no records of service done. Rear tire needs replacing also. Thanks!!

I'd go by the oil tank, the K0 had a different one that has the neck farther out. .

I appreciate all the responses. Now I have the dilemma of how much is the bike worth. It’s far from perfect. The original paint has faded on all the tins and headlight bucket. Needs a rear tire. Only service that I can vouch for is an oil and filter change. Like I stated before, it has 42,900 miles. It’s a one owner that was bought from a widow. The new owner has it listed at $8900. I can get it for $8000 but feel like $7500 would be better, accounting for what needs to be done to make it streetable. What say ye? I’ve been away from the market too long and value y’all’s judgement. Thanks in advance!!!

If we are talking about the actual bike shown on the Facebook link and it runs as well as it looks, it’s worth $8K. Mines about the same and I would ask more for it (not for sale).

hagerty has "good" value set at 10k, this bike is in the good value range but is priced appropriately for what its missing and fading paint so if you can beat the price down to what you are talking about, then go ahead. New fenders from yamiya are going to run you about 1,000 or you can find some on ebay for around 600, new tires, new oil change and filter...

good luck!

After working at Quicken Loans I stopped paying attention to anything associating with JD Powers, sucks they purchased NADA.
At this point you have to consider which one of these companies actually has the most up to date data on sales...using multiple valuation tools will keep expectations reasonable though...they are still wildly different.
KBB doesnt go past 82'...what other valuation tools are there?

Pretty hard to beat E-bay and BAT and looking at their completed auctions to get a real flavor. Other real world auctions like Mecum and what not can have good data. If those K1's are going for big money I may have to try and dump a few !!  :D
